I use a range of tools, including EMDR, mindfulness , and family of origin work to resolve underlying struggles and transform destructive beliefs into more peaceful living.
I work with people who want better relationships with others and better relationships with themselves. Couples, families, and individuals I see are bright, curious, motivated people who find their lives disrupted somehow - by the intrusion of traumatic experiences, life transitions, or persistent struggles with mental health that don't resolve on their own. I have a deep understanding of the unique therapy needs of therapists and doctors and their partners and families, and I enjoy working with folks anywhere on the gender and sexuality spectra. I also work with torture and war trauma survivors, refugees, and asylum seekers.

I utilize several clinical modalities including EMDR, cognitive-behavioral therapy, somatic work, solution-focused therapy, design thinking and mindfulness techniques.
Therapy, like life, happens in the context of relationships. Our first task will be to form our own. During this time I’ll hear from you about what’s going well in your life as well as what is feeling difficult or overwhelming. Our work can take several forms, but in all of them I value connection, humor, and authenticity.

I have a long history of using mindfulness personally; now I use mindfulness and therapy to help my clients find tools for current relief and tools they can use going forward.
Are you feeling irritable, having difficulty sleeping or focusing, experiencing mood swings or angry outbursts? Are you avoiding people or places or activities out of fear? These kinds of problems affect relationships at home and at work, our friendships, and our love relationships. They keep us from living the kind of rewarding life we really want; they keep us from thriving. If you want to find your own path to your thriving life, I'm ready to help. I will bring my compassion, curiosity, courage, and patience. And I will encourage you to bring yours.

I have been practicing mindfulness for over fifteen years and imbue my practice with spiritually-focused understandings.
Healing is a process that we are not meant to do alone. I am here to help soften the barriers that prevent you from healing, and remove obstacles that block your full potential. During each session, I create a warm, non-judgemental space in which we can work together to unpack the challenges that you face in your life. I am committed to helping you overcome the root cause of your problems rather than simply rearranging what’s on the surface.

I primarily draw from cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy & mindfulness based self-compassion.
“The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story." -Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. We often create a story about our lives that is untrue or unkind. We become bound by shame, guilt or negative self-perceptions. These views shape how we show up in the world and dictate what we feel we deserve and what we can achieve. Four principles of my therapeutic practice include: addressing shame, challenging negative core beliefs, building self-awareness and creating self-efficacy.

I've had a personal mindfulness practice for over a decade, which informs how I show up as a therapist, and I often integrate mindfulness practices into the work I do with clients.
Are you tired of having the same argument over and over again? Even with the people we love the most, disconnection happens. I love supporting couples who want to shift old patterns of relating to each other, deepen connection, or find a better way to navigate conflict. I'm also passionate about supporting individuals who want to find freedom from entrenched patterns of relating to themselves, their past, or their loved ones. I offer nonjudgemental support to people who are feeling stuck or overwhelmed. I have advanced training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples and Nonviolent/Compassionate Communication.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
