I also employ Emotional Focus Therapy ( EFT ) for relational problems for couples and other adult relationship issues.
My name is Michael Branchaud and I am a Masters level Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, LPCC. I have been a practicing mental health professional for the past 26 years of which the last 10 years have been as a licensed psychotherapist. My therapy model is based on the Biblical concept of guarding our minds or better said, controlling our thoughts to better regulate our emotions and behaviors. This is done by understanding the relationship between our thoughts and emotions and their impact on our behaviors. I believe a person cannot change what he or she does not understand.

I am trained in Narrative Therapy, and have certificates in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy and Gottman Systems Family Therapy.
I see life as a mosaic of experiences, and we all do the best we can with what we know at the time. But sometimes, anxiety, depression or the simple challenges of daily life can hold people back from living the fullest, best story of their life. My goal as a therapist is to explore and bring to light a person’s inner strengths, so they can overcome their personal obstacles and enjoy better, more productive lives and relationships. Everyone, regardless of life’s stumbles, deserves the best life they can imagine, and my goal is to walk with them and help them along this journey.

I enjoy working with people of all ages who are struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, parenting issues, and relational challenges. I consider much of what I do to be allowing client's to gently and curiously grow in their ability to reflect on the stories they have formed about their journey. I have a great deal of gratitude for the deep, sometimes painful, places my clients allow me to explore alongside them.

I have had the privilege of getting to know and connect with people from every walk of life for almost 20 years. These experiences have helped me to understand that we all have so much in common as humans trying to navigate and accept the struggles we all have. I value all that I have learned from my clients, and hopefully helped them to find a level of peace in their lives. Using a variety of techniques, such as DBT and mindfulness with adults, couples and teens, I work to help individuals come to understand life choices.

I believe making active focused choices about how to cope with problems and reach your goals pays dividends. Some clients come to therapy to better make peace with their past so as not to continue old patterns. Others are seeking relief from stress and anxiety that the modern world seems to breed. Yet others are working on improving important relationships. Many clients are looking for answers to meaning and purpose that they have not yet resolved in their day-to-day life. What is it that you most want to work on?

Emotionally Focused Therapists

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
