No matter what you are going through, whether it be depression, anxiety , low self-worth, grief/loss, addiction, or difficulty adjusting to changes, your experience is valid. Past experiences can shape the way we think about ourselves, others, and the world around us. These beliefs or narratives can influence how we interact with the world and may sometimes cause us to feel stuck mentally, physically, or emotionally when responding to situations or stressful moments in life. Through therapy, the ultimate goal is for you to feel empowered in approaching life with greater clarity, ease, and calm.

I work with adult individuals from diverse backgrounds and all walks of life. My specialty is helping people with anxiety , depression, trauma, grief, life transition, and relational issues. Because I do not believe that one size fits all, therapy begins by getting to know you in whatever way feels comfortable for you, and working together, collaboratively, to find a direction that feels right to begin moving forward. Our lives – and where we are at any given moment – are fluid and ever-changing; therapy should reflect that.

I provide therapy to adults experiencing difficulties, conflicts, or dissatisfaction. Together, we’ll identify what’s causing these problems by talking about your present, past, dreams, fears , strengths, creativity, and hopes. We’ll work to build a trusting alliance, look for patterns in your history, and try to make meaning out of them. My job is to listen attentively and without judgment; yours is to speak as freely as possible. The goal is to help you feel better.

My approach is built on compassion, care and respect for the experiences and identities that make you who you are. Mindfulness and the power of relationship guide my work, to support clients dealing with anxiety , depression, life-transitions, trauma, grief, health issues, or other challenges. If you have suffered traumatic experiences, want to be more fully at home inside yourself or with others; if you are trying to navigate a world that too easily permits oppression, or want to grow the kernels of wholeness (even if not yet apparent) already within you, I hope to be able to work together.

I help people with many issues from depression and anxiety to workplace and relationship concerns.
Finding the right therapist is important. You want someone you can feel comfortable with, who understands your life experiences and really "gets" you. Research demonstrates that it's the quality of this relationship, more than any other factor, that makes therapy successful. To see if I might be the right therapist for you, you can read more about my approach and what it might be like to work with me at www.wittenbergconsult.com. That will help you decide if we might be a good fit.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
