Hi, I'm a clinical psychologist and have spent the last 23 years providing DBT in the Twin Cities community; first during my doctoral internship, then for 15 years at the University of Minnesota Psychiatry Department, and now in my private practice. I have been trained in multiple variations of DBT by recognized experts in DBT. I specialize in working with individuals who have a history of trauma and offer prolonged exposure as a treatment for PTSD. My training and experience has prepared me for helping individuals with a history of and/or actively struggling with suicidal thoughts and ideation.

Did you take a DNA test and have a world shattering family surprise? I have experience with DNA surprises and the trauma, identity/genetic bewilderment, and family building/adaptation as a result of the surprise. I work with historically targeted, exploited, and marginalized identities struggling with stress and anxiety around historical/intergenerational trauma under colonial and capitalist oppression. I have a decades long background in different forms of socio-political activism. Activists often don’t have the space to discuss the difficulties of movement work, but I’m here to hold that space.

I have nearly 10 years of experience in the mental health field, with careers ranging from community and residential mental health to leading mental health groups in a substance use treatment setting. I enjoy working with clients of all backgrounds and experiences. With that, I do not feel as if there is an ideal client, as everyone deserves a therapeutic, trusting relationship.

I believe that each of us possesses the tools to improve our lives. I prioritize teamwork with clients, as well as cultural sensitivity and proficiency with EMDR. I create a sense of safety with clients and believe in instilling a genuine sense of hope when working with people. I enjoy working with adults in their 20s and 30s who live with anxiety, depression, and/or trauma, and I specialize in incorporating EMDR into therapy. My specialty is working with empaths (people who feel their emotions or the emotions of others very deeply) and people who feel “cut off” from their emotions but have something they want to process.

After experiencing a devastating series of personal, relational, occupational, family, social, and spiritual obstacles in my life, my self-talk was often self-defeating. I was discontent, lacking purposeful, meaningful contact with others, and felt empty inside instead of accepting my reality and the changing interactions between the environment, others, and myself. I was caught between staying the same and recognizing and embracing change. Whether you are in a time of transition or a time of pain, I believe we all have the tools we need to walk toward a loving and meaningful life.

You may be feeling as if the old ways of doing things are no longer working. Maybe you're feeling lost, on edge, out of control, ashamed, guilty, or just plain stuck. Perhaps you feel as though you're not in control of your life, always trying to please others or change who you are in order to feel accepted. Addiction, anxiety, depression, trauma, or relational issues may be contributing to an uncontrollable imbalance in your life. What you might be looking for is to finally feel like you're in the driver's seat of your life.

My goal is to respectfully assist the people I work with deal with those changes.

Levi enjoys working with teens, emerging adults, adults, & in small groups. He puts an emphasis on emotional growth, relational depth, interpersonal skill-building, and creative self-expression. Those who seek deeper connection, emotional insight, and stronger relationships in their personal and professional domains tend to do well when working with Levi. He helps clients notice the (sometimes unfair) stories they tell themselves about who they are, often using narrative therapy to support clients. Levi believes that justice, kindness, and creativity are vital for helping people as a therapist. Humor is also an essential element.

If you’ve been feeling stuck in "survival mode," I want you to know there is a reason for what you're experiencing. Trauma isn't just a memory; it’s a physiological change that impacts your nervous system and how you move through the world. Whether you are curious about therapy for the first time or are ready to dive deep into long-standing goals, I provide a space where you are seen as a whole person, not just a set of symptoms. Together, we can move toward a life of true healing and intentionality.

Life’s most difficult experiences—grief, trauma, and shame—can feel overwhelming and isolating. As a therapist with an MSW and extensive training in multiple evidence-based approaches, I understand that healing is not only possible but can lead to profound growth and renewed hope.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
