I have been practicing as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Licensed Psychologist for over thirty years. I understand that therapy can seem mysterious and intimidating. I also know that life is filled with challenges and that relationships are very demanding and difficult to navigate. Psychotherapy can be one way of addressing whatever unique distress you may be experiencing. Together we will work to clear away the limitations of thinking and experience that are holding you back from your own wholeness- your own sense of being fully alive and engaged in your life.

I am an approved Minnesota Board of Marriage and Family Therapy Supervisor, and am available to provide supervision to students and clinicians.
It's our reality that human beings struggle at times along the road of life. I have had the opportunity to work with individuals, couples and families get over and through these life obstacles. I have been honored and amazed to witness people conquer fears, addictions and harmful experiences that have left them tired and gasping on that road, and once again pick themselves up and journey onwards.

I am one of the few therapists (less than 12%) to specialize in Marriage and Family Therapy.
Therapists can't be good at everything. That's why I devote the vast majority of my practice to couples. Relationships are hard and we can find ourselves acting in ways that surprise even ourselves when things go wrong. So, you won't find me occupying the moral high ground, playing therapy tricks on you, or judging you. I'm marriage and relationship friendly, so I won't push you toward a crisis, a divorce or a break-up. As it is 50% of marriages end in divorce and upwards of 65% of second marriages end in a break-up, so if you have hopes and dreams for making things work, I'll be behind you 100%.

I'll skillfully assess and meet you where you're at on your journey with sex therapy, marriage counseling or trauma work.
Relationship, marriage & sexual problems can deplete your ability to take pleasure in life. You're someone who's successful in your career, but when it comes to emotional or physical intimacy, you feel confused or inhibited. You're feeling nervous, sad and fearful that you'll never be free of your issues. I hear you and I'm on your side! You're ready to make a change. You're ready to break old patterns and try something new. Most of all, you're ready to experience pleasure and deep, honest relationships with people who enhance your life. I want to help you get there.

I specialize in working with teens 16+ and adults, couples, and families around marriage and divorce, co-parenting, academic, work, career, and financial issues, depression, anxiety, loss and grief, trauma and addictions.
Welcome. I believe we all have the power within us to get to the healing, healthy growth, and development we need. My particular clinical approach is based in humanistic, relational, and family systems theory, and is focused more on human potential than it is on human pathology. Prior to graduate school, I studied widely in philosophy, theology, art, literature, life sciences, and athletic performance, all of which inform my view of human nature, and human existence. What in your life would you like to be better? In our work together, I utilize the collective wisdom of the healing and growth of others to bear on the present moment.

How is your relationship with stress? Have you reached the point where stress is no longer just a thought, but has evolved into a physical state of discomfort and overall exhaustion? Stress comes to us when we are required to adjust to the competing demands and challenges present in our relationships, families, work, parenting, finances, and health. We all experience stress to varying degrees, and, if left unchecked, we be left feeling restless, overwhelmed, frustrated, and unsure about the future.

Outwardly your life appears good. You’re accomplished, educated, and successful. You’ve mastered the art of presentation, the illusion of perfection. But inside, you aren’t happy, never feeling good enough with that internal voice reminding you where you fall short. You are irritable, flat, tearful and hanging on by a thread. Recently, it's gotten worse. The years of keeping it together have left you exhausted, overwhelmed, stressed, and not even recognizing yourself. Feeling disappointed, disillusioned and dissatisfied, you’re desperate for a change. Should you get divorced, change careers, or drive away in the middle of the night?

Trauma and loss are a common part of every person’s life. We suffer beyond the experience of a specific trauma and loss, and our lives are impacted by that suffering. In the face of trauma and loss, our culture often sends the message that we should “just move on and get over it.” I would rather honor what has been lost and allow for grief to be felt. Only when we have truly processed our trauma and loss can we move into our lives holding the grief in healthy ways.

I enjoy working with people of all ages and backgrounds and have experience working with individuals, couples, and groups in treatment centers and outpatient clinics. I collaborate with my clients, providing person-centered, evidence-based treatment for mental health and substance use disorders. Often, life experiences lead us to believe that we are incapable, flawed, or unworthy. While you cannot change what has happened in the past, you can create new meaning from your experiences. You can direct your path forward, utilizing your strengths, embracing who you want to be, and living a fulfilling life that reflects your values.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
