Truth: The less you plan your life around shy bladder syndrome, the more your life will improve. Right now, you rearrange your entire day to cater to paruresis; you avoid basically anything that involves being away from home so long that you’ll need to use a public restroom. When you do try to go in public, you often psych yourself out. Your world has gotten pretty small & you’re missing out on many things you enjoy. You’ve lived in shame & secrecy for years. You might have tried therapy or DIY solutions but you're left wondering why nothing is working. It's not that you haven't planned enough, DIY'ed enough or tried enough therapy.

I specialize in therapy for adolescents and adults with depression, anxiety, and stress. Maybe you feel drained by the intensity of your emotions and how deeply affected you are by others and the world around you. Maybe you feel stuck in your head, constantly overthinking, or pushing yourself to meet impossible standards. You care a lot, often about others more than yourself, and you’re tired of feeling like it’s never enough. You’re craving space to just be, without judgment or pressure to have it all figured out. You want tools to cope and space to be heard. You want someone who truly gets what it’s like to walk in your shoes.

“Resilient.” This is a word I often use to describe clients I have the pleasure of working with in therapy, as I am struck by the human ability to cope with suffering. Yet, sometimes the ways we have learned to cope end up taking us further away from our values. I am passionate about helping my clients evaluate how past painful experiences might shape the way they are responding to their current concerns, to other people, and to their thoughts and emotions. When we have insight into where where our patterns come from, we can then decide whether they are still serving you. If not, we can try something new together.

I am a systems thinker who is a trauma-informed and LGBTQIA+-affirming therapist. I believe that healing is an inward process. Through the process of being curious and empathetic, one can integrate and expand a sense of self. I believe we learn about ourselves through our relationships and understand the feelings that arise as an opportunity for growth. I have explored many alternative healing and energy practices throughout my life. I draw on the interconnection of mind-body-spirit as a framework to help individuals strengthen self-awareness and gain clarity around challenging issues.

Are you feeling overwhelmed by cycles of worry, reassurance-seeking, or checking behaviors? Have you tried therapy before without finding lasting relief? Effective treatment starts with evidence-based care delivered by a provider who truly specializes in your area of need. Many of my clients have struggled for years because they were not receiving the gold-standard treatment for OCD. My approach is likely very different than what you have previously tried. I bring a wealth of knowledge from both my masters and doctoral training, as well as years of specialized clinical experience treating OCD and anxiety disorders.

Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) Therapists
Do I need exposure and response prevention therapy?
Many clients decide to seek help for obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors when these symptoms are distressing enough to disrupt everyday life. Any thoughts or behaviors that cause friction in close relationships are also worth addressing. In addition, the client’s symptoms don’t have to be severe for them to benefit from ERP therapy.

Is exposure and response prevention therapy part of cognitive behavioral therapy?
Exposure and response prevention is one specific type of CBT that focuses on behavioral change in response to triggering stimuli. It is related to exposure therapy but adds an additional component of preventing compulsive and harmful responses.

How long does exposure and response prevention therapy take?
While every patient is different, exposure and response prevention therapy typically lasts around 12 sessions, although some treatments can take longer. A therapist will determine if the treatment is complete based on how the client faces their fears, particularly the strongest ones. When a client feels less anxiety about stimuli that once evoked terror or distress, that is generally an indication that they are nearing the end of ERP therapy.

What are the limitations of exposure and response prevention therapy?
The most common pitfalls of exposure and response prevention therapy include not addressing a client’s core fears, allowing the client to avoid their most distressing stimuli, and using imaginary exposure when the client requires real-life exposure (and vice versa). ERP therapy is most effective when the client commits to the full course of treatment; if the client stops early or doesn’t practice what they have learned outside of therapy sessions, they are less likely to have successful outcomes.
