I work with PTSD, trauma, substance abuse, depression, anxiety , bipolar disorder, relationship issues, grief, and job stress with clients from all races, sexual orientations, ethnicities, and belief systems.
Individuals are often given advice by those who have not taken the time or had the ability to understand the issue. My goal in therapy is to understand the concerns and challenges from your perspective. Only after a relationship based on trust, empathy, understanding, and at times even humor has been built, can I help you achieve your goals. Everyone deserves individually tailored treatment. If this approach seems to be a fit, please schedule an appointment. If for some reason it seems that I can't help you, I will do my best to help you find someone who can.

I work with all ages and am trained as a generalist; special areas of interest and expertise include depression, anxiety , trauma, relationships, self-esteem, attachment, and transitional issues.
I believe that the best therapy is radically empathetic, that all people hold the innate capacity for healing, and that courage and strength are discovered when people are allowed the space to express and release emotional pain. I use relational, evidence based approaches and work collaboratively with my clients to target the issues most challenging to them. The approaches I use vary and are dependent on the needs of the individual, family, or couple that I'm working with, modalities include DBT, TF-CBT, EMDR, psychodynamic and attachment theory.

When unexpected things happen we can be left reeling from a variety of emotions that we do not know how to cope with (Anger, Grief, Anxiety , Sadness, Uncertainty, etc.). Unexpected things can be anything from the Pandemic, the loss of a loved one, or realizing people in your life do not understand you. Misunderstandings can lead to anger, hurt feelings, and broken relationships; whether between couples, parents and children, siblings, or co-workers. How we communicate with ourselves is also important; many of us are harder on ourselves than anyone else.

Individuals and families of immigrants from a Muslim background can go through much psychological turmoil for being minorities in a mainstream culture that misunderstands them. This may lead to low self esteem, anxiety and depression. They would need affirmations and support to find balance between cultures and find peace within themselves. They would require special understanding of their own culture and the mainstream culture to develop confidence in themselves and be assertiveness while being respectful to everyone around them. A good therapist would instill a sense of wellbeing in them as they contribute positively to life.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
