Currently Accepting New Clients. Hi there! I'm Allison, currently practicing therapy virtually from Southeast MN. I specialize in treating persistent mental health conditions like co-occurring mental health and addictive disorders, borderline personality disorder, and complex trauma. Many of my clients struggle with codependent relationship patterns. They learned these survival strategies early in life, but now, it feels impossible to imagine a different way. Reflecting on this leads to feelings of guilt, anxiety, and never being “good enough.”

Deciding to pursue therapy is a decision that is not easy for everyone. It can be hard work, and emotionally draining. It can seem like there's no light at the end of the tunnel, and even if there is a light, it's miles and miles away. But, if you're struggling with anything in life - from work stress to family relationships, childhood trauma or shame, diagnosed mood disorders, addictions of any kind - you owe it to yourself to try to move toward that light. Taking this first step is often the hardest, and finding the perfect therapist may be part of your challenge. Let’s see if we might be a fit.

You may be functioning on the outside, working, leading, caring for others, but inside you feel overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected from yourself. Maybe old experiences keep showing up in your body, sleep, or relationships, even though you’ve “moved on.” Maybe you’re carrying grief, trauma, or a quiet sense of moral conflict you can’t quite name. You don’t have to hold this alone.

My approach is client-centered and rooted in the belief that the client knows themselves best; this approach is based on Adlerian teachings and the idea of holism. I look at all aspects of them as a person and not just the presenting problem. I like to help clients gain the skills to navigate through their struggles. While I understand the purpose and need for goals, I am more of a solution-based clinician. I believe in fostering the client’s strength to achieve what they want out of therapy. I try to accomplish all of this through a sense of humor, directness, and a dash of approachability.

I work with people who carry a lot but rarely talk about it: the helpers, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and the ones everyone depends on. On the outside: they look strong, but inside they may feel overwhelmed, anxious, burned out, or stuck in painful patterns. You deserve space to focus on you without guilt. At your own pace, we’ll work through what’s weighing on you building the coping skills, emotional balance, and confidence you need to feel grounded and steady in everyday life.

I take a casual, direct approach to therapy—because meaningful work doesn’t require a formal or overly clinical space to be effective. In my office there’s room for honesty, real conversation, and (dark) humor! My style is compassionate, honest, and focused on helping you make meaningful, practical changes while maintaining self-compassion and self-respect. My work is rooted in helping clients process and move past trauma, build insight, increase flexibility in how they respond to challenges, let go of old patterns and move forward with greater clarity, resilience and effectiveness.

The ideal client I have a passion for working with may feel unsure about therapy and/or have concerns on how to move forward in their life. They may be navigating re-entry after incarceration, life changes, anxiety, depression, trauma, and/or struggle with substance use. They want stability, peace of mind, and a stronger sense of control. At their core, they’re seeking understanding, structure, guidance, and practical tools that truly help. Most of all, they want to feel heard, respected, grounded, purposeful, and confident as they handle life’s challenges without judgment and gain self-acceptance.

I understand that therapy doesn't have to be a life-long process but it can help significantly when you are going through difficult circumstances that create worry, anger or a feeling of being at a loss. Stress seems to be an indicator that issues need to be addressed. I am a therapist who believes that my clients have many of the answers to their problems, I am there to help them through the journey to uncover what the answers are.

I focus on building a strong foundational relationship with clients, collaboratively developing self-awareness, mood-stabilizing skills and communication tools that allow for the safe reprocessing of difficult experiences and emotions. I work with people who have experienced a range of challenges, from difficulties with life adjustments to complicated trauma and loss. It is important to me that clients understand that difficult and traumatic experiences can arise from a seemingly “normal” childhood or life event. Therapeutic support and guidance for any destabilizing event or emotion is a valuable resource.

My ideal client is an adult who has experienced complex or relational trauma, such as childhood adversity, adoption or foster care, intimate partner violence, or an emotionally unsafe upbringing. They may also be navigating anxiety, depression, or substance use as coping strategies. Though often high functioning outwardly, they feel exhausted, overwhelmed, or disconnected inside. They seek a safe, trauma-informed space to build emotional regulation, self-compassion, sustainable recovery, and healthier relationships, ultimately finding relief from survival mode and building a grounded, meaningful life.

Bipolar Disorder Therapists
What is the most successful approach to treating bipolar disorder?
Living with bipolar disorder can be challenging, and a number of therapies have been found effective in providing support to patients as they gain the skills to understand and manage the disorder. Family-focused therapy is often helpful for children and teens (the majority of cases develop before age 19); it aims to minimize mood cycling by improving family communication and reducing conflict. It also helps young people navigate the developmental challenges the disorder can create. Cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) and variants such as Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)help patients manage the thoughts and feelings that influence bipolar mood swings as well as develop specific behavioral strategies to counteract them.

What happens in therapy for bipolar disorder?
Because the patterns of mood switching and its triggers differ for each person and can change over time, mood tracking or monitoring becomes a basic way patients learn about the nature of their condition. One of the most common features of therapy is finding a workable method of mood monitoring, in which patients track their daily activities and rate their moods, then use the findings to adjust routines accordingly. Patients learn ways of handling the many stresses that arise in life so that they do not trigger mood swings.

What kinds of problems does therapy help with?
Like many other mental health disorders, BPD is heavily influenced by stress; therapy provides skills for coping with stressors of all kinds. Therapy is extremely important for helping individuals identify the situations that may trigger mood switching, so that mood swings can be prevented. Therapy may especially target recognition of the early stages of mood change so that they can be managed. In addition, therapy helps patients deal with the significant amount of turbulence the disorder can create in relationships and in work life.

What is the goal of therapy for bipolar disorder?
Therapy helps patients set up their lives to maintain stability so that their mood isn’t constantly threatened by daily events. Perhaps the first task of therapy is to educate people about the nature of the disorder. At the same time, a primary goal of therapy is to enhance adherence to drug treatment. Extended periods of mood stability can prompt patients to discontinue medication, triggering relapse, while the early phases of manic episodes can feel so energizing that patients stop medication, ushering in full-blown mania and the altered self-perception that can lead to destructive behaviors. Another major goal of therapy is to understand one’s mood patterns so as to minimize both the frequency and intensity of mood cycling.
