My expertise is in treating African Americans, bi-racial, and
female
clients.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over 30 years of experience. I have written, presented, and consulted extensively about diversity, developmental psychology, multiculturalism, severe psychopathology, childhood abuse, trauma, sexual assault, community/domestic violence and African-American mental health. I believe everyone has a right to wellness and use strategies that promote humor, hard work, experiential learning and resilience. There is a saying: "You do not have to teach a cut how to heal, you just have to create the best environment for healing to take place." My goal is to create a loving space for healing to take place.

One of the first steps to living a more happy, healthy and satisfying life is to see things from a new perspective. While self-help is valuable, it's often not enough to keep from feeling stuck in the same patterns or feelings. With over 30 years of experience, I specialize in working with men and
women
who feel limited, or less than fulfilled, in certain areas of their lives and are interested in taking the next step.

My specialty is working with
women
in troubled, difficult, or abusive relationships who long to feel empowered and regain their self esteem.
We spend our lives in relationships. People in our familes, co-workers, friends partners, significant others, and spouses are part of life. Those relationships are valuable and may provide happiness and satisfaction. But relationships can become difficult and strained and sometimes cause us personal stress and frustration. Sometimes we might wonder if a relationship is really positive or not. Working with clients on improving their relationships is what I do most.

Mary Universities’ Marriage and Family Therapy program and have several years of experience working with
women
and children in shelters, partial hospitalization programs, and adolescents and their families in Day Treatment programs.
Post pandemic the world can feel scarier than it ever has. The social and structural change that occurred in our culture has placed more burden on relationships, individuals, and families who are trying to get through their day-to-day activities. The changes can feel overwhelming, exhausting, and relentless, but it doesn’t have to be that way. While I can’t stop social injustices, severe and traumatic weather, or interpersonal violence, I can offer strategies that provide both coping and healing.

women
trying to conceive, are pregnant, or postpartum, and am in the process of completing a certification in perinatal mental health.
Let's get to it. I'm here to help you facilitate big changes in your life. I specialize in working with trauma, meaning that from session one I will work with you to understand how current problems may stem from past experiences. I live for sessions where clients say “that makes so much sense!” Right away I will be transparent about what course of treatment may be helpful for you and what approaches or goals I believe could be helpful. I strive to instill hope and forward movement from our very first encounter.

I specialize in helping
women
feel confident in their relationships by teaching them how to express their needs, set boundaries, and communicate effectively to reduce feelings of stress, frustration, and guilt.
Do you consider yourself a people pleaser? Is it hard to prioritize yourself without feeling guilty? Do you struggle to say no or tell people how you really feel? Are you trying to heal from emotional wounds from a loved one? Many of my clients say they feel stuck in a difficult relationship with their parent, spouse, or other loved one. They feel the stress, frustration, and resentment building but they "don't like confrontation" so they become exhausted and have little hope that things can change. They suffer from low self-esteem, overwhelm, and indecisiveness.

Humor is one of my therapist superpowers. On the journey to greater emotional well-being, I want you to laugh, feel comfortable, and not take yourself too seriously. Seriously! Because when you're a parent worried about your child's peer relationships or your teen's behaviors or school performance, I know life can feel heavy. Even for adults dealing with typical life transitions, it can feel stressful and overwhelming. Whatever the challenge, I'm here for you. We will work together to regain the light-heartedness that makes life enjoyable.

Immediate openings. Being misunderstood sucks, whether you’re a (so-called) “troublesome” kid or a grown-up still trying to figure it all out. Healing the hurt so you can uncover your resiliency and power is what therapy is all about! It’s a privilege to walk the sometimes difficult, yet so very rewarding path of therapy with you, and I don’t take that for granted. I am passionate about providing an open and affirming space for all identities - I am dedicated to LGBTQ+ equality and inclusion, and I work to be actively anti-racist in my approach as well.

I believe that therapy can greatly help with coping skills, with dealing with long- standing problems; and with stress and pain management. During COVID, many people have been focused on day to day issues relating to depression, anxiety, and PTSD; and are trying to cope with these in the best possible way. All types of mood disorders, anxiety, chronic pain and illness, and transitions feel more pressing. Some months I have not been able to accept new patients due to high demand for services and a full waiting list; other months I am able to accept 1-2 new patients.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
