I use Emotionally Focused Therapy, an empirically supported method.
Research shows consistently that no matter what counseling method is used, the connection between you & your therapist is the essential factor in feeling better about yourself and your life. I create a safe and supportive relationship with people. It is important that you feel heard, acknowledged & supported. This is the significant ingredient for your personal relationship transformation. In addition to deep listening, learning how to be resilient and knowing that you can support yourself through life's challenges will give you a sense of empowerment and self-esteem. I am active in the sessions, warm, supportive & practical.

One of the first steps to living a more happy, healthy and satisfying life is to see things from a new perspective. While self-help is valuable, it's often not enough to keep from feeling stuck in the same patterns or feelings. With over 30 years of experience, I specialize in working with men and women who feel limited, or less than fulfilled, in certain areas of their lives and are interested in taking the next step.

Being misunderstood sucks, whether you’re a (so-called) “troublesome” kid or a grown-up still trying to figure it all out. Healing the hurt so you can uncover your resiliency and power is what therapy is all about! It’s a privilege to walk the sometimes difficult, yet so very rewarding path of therapy with you, and I don’t take that for granted. I am passionate about providing an open and affirming space for all identities - I am dedicated to LGBTQ+ equality and inclusion, and I work to be actively anti-racist in my approach as well.

We spend our lives in relationships--with family, friends and most significantly our spouses or partners. Those relationships can be fufilling and provide great happiness. But sometimes relationships can become frustrating, stressful or emotionally exhausting. Working with an experienced therapist can help you determine the real problematic issues and what could help to improve the relationship. You may want to evaluate if your relationship is truly healthy or not. I see adults, and adolescents.

Beginning a therapeutic journey can be a stressful or uncomfortable situation. I get it, it is tough to be vulnerable, let alone with someone you don’t know yet! My main priority is to provide a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment in which your child can be vulnerable. The therapy space and therapeutic relationship are established to facilitate the trust required to share tough subjects. Upon establishing a therapeutic relationship, therapy becomes a creative, collaborative experience of us working together to find new ways to heal and grow.

I've helped many clients work through difficult challenges they're facing and would like to help you too. I have a very straight forward, assertive and somewhat irreverent communication style. We work hard, bravely dig as deep as we need to and have some belly laughs along the way. My clients appreciate how real and raw it can get, they feel free to share the good, bad and the ugly. If you're ready to be a good student I am a good teacher = Let's roll up our sleeves?!

Are you using unhealthy coping mechanisms to deal with your anxiety and/or depression? Increasingly, the pressures of life, complicated relationships, traumatic events which are or feel beyond our control are leading us to problematic emotional states. Frequently, negative emotions such as shame, anger or hatred, or envy and jealousy, link to negative self-talk, dictating our feelings, thoughts and actions. I find it is usually helpful to apply a holistic approach, working with the mind/body connection which counsels attention to the present moment rather than dwelling in the past or obsessing about the future.

The journey to emotional health begins with discovering and nurturing the authentic self. When we make choices that are inconsistent with who we are, our ability to participate in life, to love and work is compromised. This can often lead to avoiding the things that truly matter to us causing us to feel depressed or anxious. When this happens, we tend to avoid more. And the cycle continues. In my work, I help clients (ages 16+) re-engage with life focusing on their values and what matters most to them.

We believe emotional wellness matters (a lot), and that everyone has the right to make it a priority. Unfortunately, it’s not always that simple. So many questions can get in the way. Maybe you’ve even asked them yourself: Is this normal? Can talking to someone really help me? What is therapy all about, anyway? What would people say if they knew I was going? How do I find the right therapist? Will I be comfortable there? When will I find the time? Will my insurance pay for this? If this sounds like you, you’re not alone. And we can help. I provide individual therapy for adults and older teens. I work with my clients to develop a genuine connection based on trust, honesty, support, and compassion. I recognize and honor people as individuals and meet them where they are, helping them navigate the many struggles they may face in their unique journey through life. Working together, we will address the issues that are affecting you and/or those you care about and develop a plan to overcome them. Throughout this process, my clients gain a stronger and deeper connection with themselves and the world around them.

Emotionally Focused Therapists

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
