Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists in Oakdale, MN
As a certified perinatal mental health practitioner, I am passionate about helping parents get through one of the most challenging yet magical times of their lives.
Did you know that 1 in 5-7 women and 1 in 10 men experience a perinatal mental health disorder? It's the most common complication of childbirth, more than pre-eclampsia or gestational diabetes. Young people commonly struggle with mental health symptoms too; it's tough getting to know yourself while dealing with stress, life, and school. You are not alone!

You’ve probably spent a long time trying to explain it—to teachers, doctors, partners, or even just to yourself. Why your brain works differently. Why things that seem easy for others feel overwhelming or exhausting for you. Or maybe you’re a parent watching your child struggle, knowing something isn’t clicking, and not getting the answers you need. I specialize in working with neurodivergent individuals and families—ADHD, autism, and those who have always felt “different” but couldn’t quite explain why. Many of the people I work with also carry trauma, or the impact of trying to fit into systems that were never designed for them.

Something feels off — but you can't quite put it into words. Maybe it's a heaviness you carry into every room, a pattern you keep repeating, or a sense of being disconnected from yourself or the people around you. You've tried to think your way through it or talk your way through it, but nothing is actually changing. I work with adults who feel stuck in exactly that place — overwhelmed, shut down, or emotionally tangled — and need a way into their experience that doesn't rely on forcing words.

Do your child's behaviors and emotions impact you and your family on the daily? Do they impact your child's sense of self, relationships with other adults and peers? How about their school life? Do you find yourself stressed, confused, or hopeless as how to help them? It's so hard to watch our children struggle. Possible sources of stress that may be impacting your child's behavior: parental/family conflict, death of a pet, move of residence(s), school bullying, abuse/neglect, medical trauma, divorce, or separation to name a few. If any of this resonates, your child may qualify and benefit from play-based therapy.

Let's be honest, ChatGPT says this about me, "you're a builder at heart — weaving together care, business, and community. You see the broken systems, but you design practical, hopeful structures so people, families, and providers can thrive. But mostly, you're someone who got tired of the systemic dysfunction and decided to do something about it. But, you realize the only way to make change is to blend care and courage, so others feel safe enough to grow and strong enough to contribute.
I am married and have 4 children. I also believe that we are all worthwhile and valuable individuals that have something valuable to offer others.

My approach is client-centered and rooted in the belief that the client knows themselves best; this approach is based on Adlerian teachings and the idea of holism. I look at all aspects of them as a person and not just the presenting problem. I like to help clients gain the skills to navigate through their struggles. While I understand the purpose and need for goals, I am more of a solution-based clinician. I believe in fostering the client’s strength to achieve what they want out of therapy. I try to accomplish all of this through a sense of humor, directness, and a dash of approachability.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists
What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?
The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.
When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?
Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.
How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?
A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.
Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?
In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
