Transgender Therapists in Minneapolis, MN
With extensive experience supporting transgender and gender-expansive individuals, I am honored to work with clients from the LGBTQIA2S+ community and beyond.
Every person needs a secure space where they can become their most authentic selves. I strive to approach therapy with radical genuineness, compassion, warmth, and humor. I believe that therapy at its best is a creative, judgment-free space between equals. This creates an environment where you can be yourself and learn to manage thoughts and emotions getting in your way. I like to incorporate techniques from DBT, ACT, Person-Centered Therapy, Anchored Relational Therapy, body-centered approaches, sports psychology, body positivity, trauma-informed practices, and a dash of geek culture references.

I greatly enjoy working with adults (18+) who are a part of the LGBTQ+ community and/or folks navigating gender identity, perfectionism, life transitions, anxiety, and self-worth/self-compassion. I thrive when working with those who are motivated, curious, and who identify as deep thinkers and deep feelers.
The modalities I use the most include narrative therapy, self-compassion work, DBT, and ACT. I care deeply about social justice and bring an anti-oppressive, feminist, and queer lens to my work.

Therapy with me is centered on simultaneously understanding and caring for the coping strategies you've developed, and having the courage to heal. I use a psychodynamic and relational approach, which means we will explore childhood experiences and how those affect you today. We will also focus on developing the client-therapist relationship so that you feel secure enough to receive support and begin to trust yourself, as well as to make meaningful connections outside of therapy sessions.

I currently work with individuals, partners, and families. My area of passion and expertise is gender and sexuality. I also view therapy and self-care as an act of resistance and believe it can help individuals with marginalized identities cope with minority stress and systemic oppression. I am currently seeing clients virtually if you live in MN. I work with almost all mental health diagnoses including anxiety, depression, panic disorders, PTSD/CPTSD, bipolar, personality disorders, DID, and schizophrenia/delusional disorders. I also have specialized experience in substance use and eating disorders.

Hey there, my name is Alyssa and I use she/they pronouns. I am a queer, neurodivergent pre-licensed marriage and family therapist. My specialty is with couples, families, and teens/adolescents. I am currently taking new youth, teen, and couples clients! I connect with clients through humor, playfulness, and art-making, which I believe can help work through challenges that life can throw at us. In my opinion, art therapy is not about making profound art but is a tool to help process feelings and discover something new.

My clients are typically folks who identify as marginalized in some way, especially folks who identify as queer, neurodivergent, and/or disabled. I specialize in supporting folks who are chronically ill. I love working with folks with "scary" or stigmatized diagnoses, including borderline personality disorder. Although I am now proud to live in Minnesota, I am originally from Massachusetts, which comes out in my directness and my humor, both of which are tools I like to use to support clients.
I became a therapist because I love people, and I am motivated by my values of inclusivity and equity to find ways to make therapy accessible

Hello and welcome! My name is Sam (they/them), and I am so happy you're here. As a queer and non-binary identified provider, I honor how painstakingly difficult it is to exist under oppressive systems, let alone thrive. It can be isolating and scary to navigate this world alone, and I do not think you should have to. Drawing on humanistic and person-centered models of care, I aim to create a non-judgmental and empathetic space where you can bravely define what being your best self means to you. As an artist, I understand creativity's healing, grounding nature and provide art supplies for client use in sessions.

As a queer, nonbinary transgender person I am passionate about intersectional social justice and working towards a world in which everyone is treated with respect and dignity.
I use a strengths-based, person-centered, risk-reduction, and trauma-informed lens in the work that I do. I believe you are the expert on your own life experiences. I believe that the ways in which we have survived have been beautiful unique adaptations to traumatic events, but they may not be the ways in which we want to continue to live.

As an openly polyamorous-queer-gender expansive person, I’ve spent most of my life experiencing microaggressions & unlearning the cisnormative & hetronormative messages that constantly tell us we are defective, broken, or unwanted. They are wrong! We are fabulous, vibrant & deserving, of all the gifts the world has to offer. I became a therapist to share what I’ve learned, bring healing, & advocate for queer/trans youth, young adults & their families while working for social justice & full inclusion into society. Our work will be in a safe, affirming space so we can collaborate to create & implement a road map to your recovery.

I have a lot of experience working with the LGBTQ community, specifically the transgender community, as well as experience working in reproductive and sexual healthcare.
I see therapy not as a surgical procedure to fix brokenness, but rather as a process similar to exercise—aimed at enhancing our existing strengths, resilience, and capacity for growth. I work to cultivate a safe space where individuals can sift through the noise of every day stress and painful memories of the past to discover new pathways forward. I strive to understand clients’ stories within the context of the many different systems surrounding them. I believe that our collective healing and liberation is tied to one another and that therapy can help us to reconnect to ourselves so we can better show up in our community.

I believe recovery, rest, community, and joy are radical acts of resistance, especially in a world that demands oppressed people remain quiet and small. I work with couples, polycules, families, and individuals on issues including mental illness, identity, body image, sex, systemic barriers, the daily horrors of living under capitalism, and countless other things I can't fit into 640 characters. I take pride in learning just as much from my clients as they learn from me.

Much of my work is centered around gender – from issues surrounding identity exploration, to social/medical transition, to gender dysphoria, to gender-identity-related interpersonal challenges.
I believe the single most important component of therapy is the unique and authentic relationship that is forged between therapist and client. Beyond this, my therapeutic approach is guided primarily by cognitive behavioral therapy, existentialism, and feminist therapy which together encourage empowerment, responsibility, authenticity, and acceptance.

Life often brings us moments where we feel ready for a change —where the landscape of our experiences no longer reflects where we want to be. With over 10 years of experience as a therapist, having multiple evidence-based training, and who is constantly learning, I work to provide care through that change. I work from a consent-based approach helping to identify what occurs in the brain and nervous system that is impacting you in your life, so that you can take the next steps forward to where you want to go.

Transgender Therapists
As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?
A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.
What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?
Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.
How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?
An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.
How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?
Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
