Hi, I'm a clinical psychologist and have spent the last 21 years providing DBT in the Twin Cities community; first during my doctoral internship, then for 15 years at the University of Minnesota Psychiatry Department, and now in my private practice. I have been trained in multiple variations of DBT by recognized experts in DBT. I specialize in working with individuals who have a history of trauma and offer prolonged exposure as a treatment for PTSD. My training and experience have prepared me for helping individuals with a history of or actively struggling with
suicidal
thoughts and ideation.

My areas of specialty include GLBTQ individuals; recovery from trauma; and aftermath of
suicide
for family and significant others.
Every person's experience in therapy is unique. I know that my 20+ years of experience, the ongoing training I consistently pursue and the areas in which I have particular expertise are important factors to the people who come to see me. I create a safe and compassionate environment so individuals and couples can freely express their questions and needs. Beyond those critical pieces, I believe that the success of the therapy will rest on our ability to work together in an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust.

Prior to private practice, I spent 7 years working in residential treatment with adolescents & their parents, addressing issues of self-harm,
suicidal ideation
, & trauma.
I’m a relational therapist who provides individual therapy to adolescents and adults and couples therapy to couples at any stage, who adhere to any relationship configuration (couples therapy is in person only). I believe suffering and pain stem from disconnection and my hope is to help reconnect you with what’s most meaningful in your life. I will develop a trusting therapeutic connection with you, assist you in identifying past experiences, beliefs, & behavioral patterns that contribute to disconnection in your life, and collaborate with you to take steps towards creating and deepening connection with yourself and others.

I currently work with clients 12 years and older, both individuals and families, who are seeking support related to trauma, depression, self-injury and
suicidal ideation
, family relationships, Reactive Attachment Disorder, anxiety, body dysmorphia, grief and loss, LGBTQIA+ issues (and other identity-related issues), and social anxiety, among others.
As a relational therapist with previous experience as a youth worker, I believe most suffering is caused by a failure of belonging. When trauma or other significant difficulties occur, we can take on beliefs and ways of being that are bound by the feeling that we are alone and unable to access the world of belonging, both within ourselves and in relationships. We find it almost impossible to honor all our parts and to feel free to accept them. My aim as a therapist, then, is to create a space where a client’s experiences may fully belong and they may feel understood and valued for who they are in the way they choose to be.

My areas of expertise include working with trauma, attachment, relationship issues, parenting support, anxiety and depression, self-harm and
suicidal ideation
.
Beginning therapy can be an overwhelming process and finding the right fit with a therapist is key to facilitating change. While I have many “tools in my toolbox” through years of experience and training, I believe the most important piece in the therapeutic relationship is connection and creating a safe space to allow vulnerability to be present. I utilize an attachment and trauma lens in my work, as I believe we learn how to function given the families, relationships and communities in which we grow up.

Chaos and misery are consuming you, your relationships, and your entire life. You have to figure out how to take the reins and get control of your life. You can no longer stand feeling so miserable. If you are wondering if this is just the way life is - it doesn’t have to be! I have seen so many people crawl from the depths of despair to see the light of day - get their relationships in order, build respect and love for themselves, get people to take them seriously, and live desirable lives, all while managing the inevitable pain that comes with it. It is possible and humans are incredible - I see it all the time.

My mission is to genuinely share myself with others so that we can reach higher levels of understanding and experience acceptance, commitment, and hope. We are doing the best we can, with what we have, in this moment and we can do better, being more motivated to change. With a dialectical perspective, drawing from the principles of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), I focus on helping my clients achieve their goals and create a life worth living. In my work, I connect with adolescents, families, and young adults, offering a radically genuine relationship that helps them discover that hope and recovery are possible.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists
How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?
Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.
Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?
The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
