Substance Use Therapists in Minneapolis, MN
I am currently working with individuals 18+ and specialize in neurodivergence (specifically ADHD and Autism), substance use, and identity.
As an AuDHD person myself, I have curated an intense passion for supporting others who identify as neurodivergent or want to explore what that means to them. With a cohesive background with both mental health & substance use community support, I offer a holistic and understanding approach for resources, support, and alternative approaches for life.

The best indicator of healing in therapy is the quality of the working relationship. I live by these words by offering a safe space for clients to unmask and encourage their needs to be known. Often people are sharing their most vulnerable moments in the four walls of my office and I see it as my duty to honor their experiences with curiosity and gentleness. As a therapist I’m not shy about letting patients know I have personal experience with mental health, addiction, and queer/ trans identity. Clients will likely notice the humor, creativity, and honesty I bring to sessions.

I also have a passion for supporting individuals with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders in their process of working towards change.
I believe that that people can heal and grow through connection, safety, and the powerful experince of being seen and heard. By fostering increased awareness, acceptance, and skills, therapy can spark transformation. Clients have described me as compassionate, warm, and authentic. I also believe in the healing power of humor and levity when appropriate. My strengths-based approach focuses on enhancing each person's unique resources and capacities. I am also trained in brainspotting (level 2), a powerful brain-body approach that can support healing from trauma, address the roots of distress, and promote emotional well-being.

"I am not crazy," is the first thing many hear when thinking of mental health. Mental health is less about being crazy and more about over all well-being. Research shows that expressing ourselves can lead to positive change and better understanding of ourselves. During our journey together, I respect my clients by bringing in a culturally informed and non-judgmental lens, utilizing personal, religious/spiritual, and cultural strengths approach to healing. Together we will work on listening to our bodies and minds, integrating both for restoration and healing.

We’ve all struggled at times, in ways both big and small. If you are interested in changing your relationship with yourself and others, I can help. People come to me to better their communication skills, unlearn patters that negatively impact their significant relationships (including with self), and make room for joy and meaning. Some clients come looking for tools to manage anxiety; others seek tips and insight for navigating through grief and loss; still others wish to improve their intimacy and communication with their partners. I work with individuals, couples, and families on a wide range of life's experiences.

For 20 years I have supported folks with mental health conditions and substance use disorders.
Have you made significant changes in your life but find yourself stuck in old patterns? Are you in recovery from drugs or alcohol or disordered eating, but still find yourself struggling in other ways? My Name is Kelle Kirk and I help folks in recovery STAY in recovery. Many of us have found out that cutting out the drinking or drugging or changing our relationship to food or our bodies didn't "fix" everything; in some ways, maybe we found things to be more intense or complicated in this new landscape. You have come so far and made such progress, let's work on the being human and truly do something different.

In addition to an independent licensure for MN, I also have an addiction studies certificate that is helpful in supporting those impacted by substance use.
I often meet people at the moment they realize anxiety, past hurt, or long‑standing habits are demanding way too much rent for the space they take up. My style is conversational, trauma‑aware, and sprinkled with humor because therapy doesn’t have to feel like a performance review. Together we slow things down, build awareness, and strengthen the mind‑body connection so you can move toward choices that feel more like you. My goal is a space that’s honest, safe, and genuinely supportive of real change.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
