Sometimes in life we can feel like we have no control over what is happening, the paths our relationships are taking, or what the future might have in store for us. We can get to a place where we are stuck in a continuous cycle of negative thinking, gloomy feelings, and ineffective behaviors. I provide therapy to individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, grief/loss, life transitions, relationship changes/separation, substance use issues, stress management, academic challenges, sports/performance concerns, chronic illness, sexuality/gender identity issues, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia spectrum, and life balance.

Schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders are my area of specialty. I offer one-on-one therapy, family therapy, parenting therapy, and a group therapy called Living with Schizophrenia . The social services many clients benefit from (social workers, psychiatrists, etc.) are often difficult to find, and I collaborate with families, psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, and others to help you figure out what you need and how to get it. I also provide support for the emotional costs of the illness and help clients learn skills to manage their symptoms. Sessions are usually fully covered by insurance.

People come to therapy for many reasons. In the first few sessions, I want to get to know you--what you are struggling with, your hopes and fears for the future, what seems to be getting in the way, what strengths and assets you bring. Together, we arrive at a plan, identifying your goals, sources of distress, and how best to work toward symptom relief and greater satisfaction with life and relationships. My approach integrates several treatment modalities, including psychoanalytic/psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness-based therapies, life-span developmental approaches, attachment theory, family and couples therapy.

I offer therapy for a variety of mental health issues and have an extensive background in depth psychology and Jungian therapy. I enjoy working with individuals who are interested in deeply understanding themselves. In contrast to mainstream approaches to therapy, which focus on teaching skills or challenging a person's thinking, I emphasize working to understand the emotional-relational-spiritual roots of my client's psychology. It is at this deeper level that lasting change can occur.

Do you feel like a stranger in a strange land, lost and confused? You don't need to go it alone. I specialize in providing culturally appropriate psychological and cognitive assessments and psychotherapy. I believe I have two jobs, first to listen, really listen with wisdom and compassion to my clients to find out what is going on, what is causing the struggles, what can be done to address the problems and what are my client's core strengths. My second job is helping my clients once again experience those core strengths.

Psychosis Therapists

What’s the most effective treatment for psychosis?

The most effective treatment for psychosis is coordinated specialty care. In this model, a team of professionals works with a patient to address all aspects of the underlying disorder. This approach incorporates individual or group therapy, employment and education support, family support and education, medication management (which often involves low doses of antipsychotics), and case management to facilitate problem-solving as needed.

When should people seek treatment for psychosis?

People should seek immediate treatment at the earliest indication of psychosis. Symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized or blocked speech, and agitated body movements. Early signs that a person may be developing a disorder that will lead to psychosis include suspiciousness of others, memory problems and distractibility, an inability to think clearly, rapid or nonsensical speech, withdrawal from friends or family, aggression toward others, and sensitivity to bright lights or noises.

What if psychosis is left untreated?

Without treatment, psychosis can have significant repercussions, including injuries, job loss, homelessness, financial or legal trouble, ruptured relationships, and suffering for the person and their family. While early treatment for psychosis often yields the best results, there is no point past which it becomes useless to seek treatment. At any point, treatment can make a difference.

How do I get someone else to seek treatment for psychosis?

It’s extremely difficult to watch a loved one suffer from hallucinations, delusions, and other elements of psychosis—sometimes exacerbated by their fears of treatment. Have a conversation with them in a quiet space and maintain a calm, supportive tone. Share your concerns about behaviors you’ve observed, suggest treatment, and explain the potential benefits. Listen carefully to their responses. The person may not be ready after one conversation, but with time, they may come around.
