Our therapeutic relationship is approached primarily with
psychodynamic
, narrative, accelerated experiential dyadic processing (AEDP), and somatic/mindfulness techniques.
Life is complex and we can process it together. As a clinical social worker, my approach to mental health is rooted in unconditional positive regard for the client. We identify your strengths and the complexities of the systems you are a part of, and hold a trauma-sensitive space. I see the therapeutic relationship as a place for empowerment, understanding and welcoming your inner wisdom, seeking calm and resolve, and being gracious with ourselves along the healing journey.

I lead with warmth, compassion, and curiosity and take a flexible approach with each individual I meet, seeking to find the best way of supporting you in achieving your unique goals. I bring a powerful enthusiasm for connecting with and supporting others through their healing and personal growth and strive to create a non-judgmental environment where clients feel comfortable to open up and explore their deepest thoughts and feelings.

I provide a private and secure environment where it feels safe to share deeply personal thoughts and feelings. This psychotherapy process requires both courage and motivation to change. Individuals and couples will move from where they are to where they want to be. Initial concerns may be about self esteem, work or relationships. However, this effective
psychodynamic
process identifies hidden patterns and themes that cloud the present and hinder future dreams. Clients describe the process as "empowering" and "life changing", leaving them with increased energy, confidence and creativity for their lives.

My approach is holistic with a foundation in
psychodynamic
work, person-centered understanding, mindfulness, the mind body connection, and feminist perspectives.
I provide a non-judgmental space to honor our past, process our feelings, and look at relationship patterns to gain new understandings and sources of motivation. My practice is trauma informed and I value the importance of recognizing systemic realties that affect our mental health and lived experiences. I believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship and strive to provide a genuine, calm, and warm environment to contain our work.

Even in strong relationships, communication is complicated - "How did we get here - again?" Often, having an educated observer - a calm presence in the room - creates a safe space for sorting out issues and listening. During therapy, we may discover your relationship's unique boundaries, expectations, and communication styles. I draw from a broad social perspective and an understanding grounded in attachment and relational
psychodynamic
theories. If you are looking for couples therapy or individual therapy you will hopefully find our work together life changing. www.comfortbelbastherapy.com

Bringing Together Art and Science reflects my clinical practice with adults, adolescents and couples. It is grounded in attachment theory, developmental/complex trauma, cognitive behavioral theory,
psychodynamic
theory and cultural competency. My practice also integrates emerging neuroscience research about the brain and how childhood and family experiences, including trauma, affects the brain and becomes the blueprint for subsequent relationships throughout our lives. My practice also has a human and artistic element - everyone is unique and our work together reflects this.

Therapy can offer guidance and support in times when we find ourselves faced with painful and challenging life circumstances. We may feel stuck in repetitive patterns that we can’t seem to break — feeling lost, overwhelmed, and unsure of what to do. As a
psychodynamic
therapist, I invite you to explore the places that you tend to avoid or keep hidden. Through this process you will deepen your self-awareness and gain greater insight into any struggles, patterns, and problems you are facing in life, thus opening new possibilities and ways of engaging in life more fully as yourself.

I work from a relational and
psychodynamic
perspective.
A good fit between a client and a therapist, followed by ongoing relationship building, is essential to facilitating the desired shifts in how a person feels about themself and their circumstances. A strong working relationship happens by way of meeting regularly and establishing trust. Within each exchange the client should feel free from judgment and comfortable to share at their own pace.

I have been trained and supervised in both transference-focused psychotherapy (TFP) and mentalization-based therapy (MBT), evidence-based
psychodynamic
therapies specifically developed for treating borderline and other personality disorders which focus on strengthening and clarifying social interactions, organizing self-image, and regulating feelings.
Are you not feeling quite right, and maybe not even sure why? Is it hard to be around others (partners, family, friends) and perhaps even be alone with yourself? Being misunderstood is exhausting. Working collaboratively with you, I would like to understand your personal experience and problems so that we can work toward a life that is more meaningful and less distressing.

I have advanced training in
psychodynamic
psychotherapy in addition to completing a clinical fellowship at the MN Psychoanalytic Society and Institute.
So often in life we think the key to finding happiness exists in something outside of ourselves. We change jobs, partners, friends and cities only to find ourselves exactly as we were, living with the same problems and patterns, and ultimately in the same self-imposed prisons. As children, we intuitively develop adaptive solutions to maladaptive situations that enable us to protect our hearts and minds. Unbeknownst to our consciousness, these self-deceptions no longer protect us, but in fact compromise our capacity for growth.

I utilize a mix of relationship-based therapy strategies and theoretical frameworks including
psychodynamic
, strengths-based, humanistic and relational perspectives, attachment theory, somatic experiencing, a Jungian orientation and focus on mindfulness.
Welcome. The desire to feel seen, heard, and understood is a universal and essential part of human wellness. In my work as a psychotherapist I try to help people understand, both emotionally and intellectually, the deeper roots of their difficulties and reignite their own natural gifts for growth, and resilience. I understand that coming to therapy can be difficult, and I strive to provide a warm, compassionate, and empathetic space for our work together. I am relational in my approach; this means I believe that how well I listen and connect with you matters.

The kind of therapy I use is informed by the tenets of
Psychodynamic
Theory, ACT, Narrative Therapy, multicultural models, and an attachment-based framework.
As a therapist, my goal is to help you to (re)discover the inner resources necessary to live a fulfilling life in the face of whatever challenges you are experiencing today. Whether a painful inner experience like depression or anxiety or a devastating life circumstance like loss or trauma, I aim to partner with you to author a new story in which your preferred outcomes are honored and those painful experiences are integrated into your life in a way that allows you to move forward with confidence.

My approach is a blend of treatment modalities stemming from
psychodynamic
, developmental/attachment, family systems and cognitive behavioral frameworks.
Through the process of psychotherapy, I work together with my clients to help them: develop a better understanding of their histories, triggers and patterns in order to get unstuck and create new endings to old stories; build coping skills and capacity for resiliency in order to face stressors and fears that are blocking growth; learn to live authentically in order to create a life congruent with what matters to them. I feel passionate about my work. I always hope to help people realize their worth and competency so they can feel empowered to take charge of their lives and live with more purpose and fulfillment.

Primarily, I reference
psychodynamic
, attachment and mindfulness theories as I work with clients, and I aim to create a strong therapeutic bond that allows clients to feel safe exploring new ways of being.
I work with individuals who seek to better understand themselves and how they interact with the world. My job is to build meaningful connections with my clients so that I can identify relational patterns that contribute to depression and anxiety, guilt, overwhelm and shame. I have learned that how we chose to relate to caregivers in childhood influences how we create and maintain relationships in adulthood. I help clients become aware of the cycle that is being unconsciously repeated so that they can eventually exercise choice to change.

I also have training in
psychodynamic
therapy, yoga and mindfulness, and in the treatment of PDST and trauma.
I strive to create a collaborative therapy in which patients feel safe to explore and reflect. I help patients identify ways in which they relate to others that at one time may have been self-protective but now are causing conflicts or feelings of aloneness. As an AEDP therapist I have skill in focusing on the body and emotions, and helping you access new and healing experiences within yourself. You will leave therapy with renewed inner resources, confidence, and a zest for life.

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
