For many of us, living fully in the present moment is hard to do when pain from the past forces itself into our daily lives. That pain can come from past abuse or neglect, rejection, disappointment,
grief
, a serious medical condition, feeling different or never fitting in, losses that may accompany aging or other life transitions, or the accumulated assaults of racism, sexism, homophobia or any other "ism". My goal as an EMDR-trained, Certified Clinical Trauma Professional is to work together with you to help you learn to live more fully in the present moment, free from the pain of the past.

Grief
can hit you like a ton of bricks, out of nowhere or over the smallest things. It can feel all-consuming, lonely, and confusing. I’m talking about all sorts of
loss
;
death
of a loved one, loving someone with a terminal illness, losing a family pet, losing a job, breaking up with a partner, pregnancy termination, and more. Each one has it's own unique character and pain, just as no
loss
is the same as another. And still, we can find connection through
loss
to ourselves, our loved ones, our humanity and our future.

I have extensive experience working with relationship issues,
grief
and
loss
, identity development, and trauma.
Therapy can offer guidance and support in times when we find ourselves faced with painful and challenging life circumstances. We may feel stuck in repetitive patterns that we can’t seem to break — feeling lost, overwhelmed, and unsure of what to do. As a psychodynamic therapist, I invite you to explore the places that you tend to avoid or keep hidden. Through this process you will deepen your self-awareness and gain greater insight into any struggles, patterns, and problems you are facing in life, thus opening new possibilities and ways of engaging in life more fully as yourself.

Grief
,
loss
,
death
, dying, moving to memory care, etc - these aren't dinner table conversations folks want to have.
Currently accepting new clients for telehealth in Minnesota, Michigan, and Florida as well as Supervisees in MN who are seeking LMFT/LPC/LPCC licensure. My clients are often either grieving, caring for a parent or spouse, or experiencing their own chronic or terminal illness. Oftentimes I help families have hard conversations about end-of-life decisions and potential moves into residential long-term care. It's true, there is always something more pleasant to talk about. And these conversations need to happen, too.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
