I focus on empowering
women
who are involved in codependent, destructive relationships with men or
women
(partner or family member) who are absent or abusive due to addiction, sexual compulsivity, mental illness, anger or emotional immaturity.
Discover your healing wisdom, strength and serenity as you confront unhealthy patterns in your relationships. Problems and crises offer invitations to personal or relational growth. We explore strategies for moving forward, whether that means feeling empowered to make changes, or accepting life on life's terms. Learn to respond to difficult situations non-reactively, with curiosity, detachment and compassion. Develop skillful communication which enables you to negotiate healthy boundaries and effectively resolve conflicts. Begin speaking your truth, expecting to be heard. Believe that you deserve to be treated well, with kindness. Learn simple, daily skills which promote happiness and contentment.

I provide safe, affirming, and heartfelt empowerment and grounding to
women
experiencing a range of mental health issues.
We all encounter times in life where we are unexpectedly thrown off balance. Maybe you have recently suffered a jarring or traumatic event, or are going through a transition that feels more difficult than you had imagined. Or maybe past traumas or hurts have come roaring to the surface, impacting the way you relate to your spouse, your children, friends or family. Therapy offers a connected space in which you can develop awareness and insight into the relationship between past and present, gain resources for regulating stress and other overwhelming feelings, and weave new patterns of relating to yourself and the people you love.

These are trying times and you or your child may benefit from therapy. I see children, adolescents, and young adults for psychotherapy. I also work with adults in therapy to support them in their parenting. I have a special interest in working with girls and young
women
(3-25 years-old) related to all mental health concerns (anxiety, depression, ADHD, ASD, grief/loss etc.) and building feelings of self-worth, identity, confidence, purpose, and energy in their lives. Children experience a range of mental health challenges (listed to the right) that are treatable and can get back on their own developmental trajectories and thrive.

Some of my work is with adolescent and adult
women
,teaching them the skills to manage underlying anxiety and trauma which often predate their substance use, adding to the effectiveness of the medication.
I work with families who have experienced a variety of traumas in my work at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Much of the that job involves counseling parents who have lost an infant or child, or who have a child with chronic health problems, or whose child has a life threatening condition. In addition, couples who try to have another child after a loss have specific needs. When interventions are available to address the trauma of child illness or death right away, we can sometimes reduce the severity of the struggles with their trauma.

I am passionate about supporting
women
as they navigate the perinatal period - pregnancy, birth and postpartum. This is a period of transformation, where we may experience changes emotionally, physically, interpersonally, and, where my clinical focus is, in identity. The experience surrounding pregnancy and birth, especially when one or both don’t go as planned, can increase feelings of distress, isolation, and overwhelm - adding challenge to an already intense life transition. The first years of parenthood involve a delicate interweaving of our past and present sense of self.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
