Couples Counseling Therapists in Minneapolis, MN

I enjoy working with individuals, couples, families, and groups experiencing relational stress, navigating life transitions + seeking emotional connection.
I connect and earn trust quickly. I validate and remind people of their strengths and resilience. In session, we explore emotions and perspectives to connect present dilemmas to bigger patterns and core beliefs. I offer grounding practices and affirm that it is okay to be exactly where you are. We sit in the discomfort, and allow energy to move!

I work with teens (16+), adults, and couples navigating a wide range of challenges, including life transitions, identity exploration, relationships, and neurodiversity (ADHD, ASD, AuDHD).
I integrate culturally sensitive, evidence-based therapies such as CBT, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), person-centered, and strength-based to create a space made for you and your goals. I also work from a neurodiversity-affirming lens, which means I focus on understanding and supporting your brain, not “fixing” it.

I have worked with various populations: parents, single parents, children, teens, women, men, LGBTQ, couples, people with substance use or other addictions.
I believe everyone has a story or many stories that they believe about themselves. Some of these stories may or may not serve people in their lives -but all have a powerful effect on how we walk in the world. Our past can shape how we feel about our present and we may not even realize it. Using integrative, cognitive-behavioral, and narrative therapy, I help clients redefine their beliefs about themselves, or how other people or situations affect their lives. I guide clients to recreate the stories that can help them initiate change, and reinforce the stories that already give them strength and clarity.

My therapeutic approach is person-centered, with a focus on building a trusting, authentic therapeutic relationship - research shows that this is the most important predictor of positive therapeutic outcomes.
Shame is a skilled liar, and it can falsely convince us that we're better off facing our struggles alone. But it’s everyone’s first time being a human, and no one has it all figured out!
I am passionate about working with folks whose voices are all too often silenced: justice-involved, adjusting to life after incarceration, navigating addictive or compulsive behavior patterns, feeling disconnected from their authentic selves, seeking personal meaning in life, or recovering after religious, domestic, or sexual abuse, harm, or trauma. You deserve to be affirmed and supported on the courageous path of healing and self-discovery.

Whether you're dealing with relationship frustrations or personal issues, it's difficult to wonder if things can get better - and to think you should be able to figure it out on your own.
I work with couples to fine-tune communication and build closeness. Learn to listen wholeheartedly. Either soften your approach to express your desires and limits effectively, or strengthen your delivery so your partner can hear your true needs. It's demoralizing to slog through fights - I'll teach you to share things productively and feel closer.

Existing in this world is hard, especially if you’re shouldering the burden alone. There’s no shame in seeking support and there’s no time like the present to begin rewriting your story. Through personal exploration and a deep, honest evaluation of your surrounding environments, you can foster a sense of clarity and become better equipped to face the obstacles that life hands out.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
