I'll help you find grounded, positive approaches to shift your situation, whether you're dealing with relationship frustrations or personal issues. I know what it's like to wonder if things can get better - and how to make that happen - and to think you should be able to figure it out on your own. If fights with your partner go nowhere, your sex life is disappointing (or non-existent), you suffer with anxiety or depression, or you or your partner struggle with out of control sexual behavior or drug/
alcohol use
, I can help. I work with both individuals and couples to improve issues that feel overwhelming or difficult to change.

The shame of not being in control of your life can feel so isolating and anxiety provoking. And the thought of talking about it with someone else can feel paralyzing at times. How did I get here? Why can't I fix this on my own? Why do I keep going back? What is wrong with me? Do I have a drinking problem? Why can't I sleep? Do I need to quit or can I just cut back? Why is my relationship so difficult? These nagging thoughts could go on and on.

I’m the kind of therapist who believes you are more than your struggle with chemicals or mental health symptoms. And there is much more to therapy than simply finding ways to avoid chemical use or rehashing your use history. I believe you deserve to have a voice in your life and in your relationships. When we look beyond labels and stigmas, we can be more curious about what drives your use, what thoughts/feelings scare you the most, and start to explore what is important to you in this life.

I gravitate toward an integrative, depth-oriented approach to therapy where we explore not only the surface but also the roots of present-day concerns, working on all levels—cognitive, emotional, somatic, and relational. I believe in the power of this work to unravel long-standing patterns that no longer serve us, and to open up new possibilities for transformation, growth, and fulfillment. Toward that end, I specialize in the treatment of complex trauma using mindfulness-based therapeutic approaches such as Internal Family Systems, NARM, EMDR, and DBT.

I offer therapy for a variety of mental health issues and have an extensive background in depth psychology and Jungian therapy. I enjoy working with individuals who are interested in deeply understanding themselves. In contrast to mainstream approaches to therapy, which focus on teaching skills or challenging a person's thinking, I emphasize working to understand the emotional-relational-spiritual roots of my client's psychology. It is at this deeper level that lasting change can occur.

Couples therapy is my passion. Given the chaos and the way in which human relationships are being undermined in our world today, I feel this work is particularly needed. As far as human happiness goes, I see time and time again that it is the quality of a person’s relationships that makes it or breaks it. This is really the foundation of my couples therapy practice. More than ever, the world needs couples who have each other’s backs, and can bring empathy and intelligent action into the world.

I work with people over 40 who want to rediscover purpose, joy, freedom and passion. At around age 40 or beyond, adults tend to go through major changes (loss, divorce, career changes, moves, etc) that upset the status quo. This is an opportunity to make significant & lasting changes to the way you live your life. I provide weekly mindset & life coaching to assist people in creating a fully satisfying life. I can help you move through blocks from your past including self-limiting thoughts and recurring emotional reactions that inhibit growth and transformation.

"To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly". The therapeutic relationship is a partnership between two people who endeavor to co-create change. I have helped clients examine a wide range of issues (relational conflict, workplace difficulties, eating disorders, body image distress, addictions, trauma, spirituality, gender identity, aging, grief and loss, and sexual orientation). We will work together to alleviate your most pressing problems as well as develop a fuller understanding of the underlying issues that keep you stuck in emotional patterns that limit your capacity to enjoy the quality of life you desire.

It takes a lot of courage to reach out to a therapist, but you've taken that first step already. I don't know your story yet, but if you are experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, or loss, you don't need to go through it alone. You deserve support, comfort, and help. Whatever you're struggling with, you're invited to my office - in person or virtual - for a conversation.

"I am not crazy," is the first thing many hear when thinking of mental health. Mental health is less about being crazy and more about over all well-being. Research shows that expressing ourselves can lead to positive change and better understanding of ourselves. During our journey together, I respect my clients by bringing in a culturally informed and non-judgmental lens, utilizing personal, religious/spiritual, and/or cultural strengths approach to healing. Together we will work on listening to our bodies and minds, integrating both in ways that bring positivity and restoration to ourselves and our relationships.

“Sometimes life is scary and dark. That is why we must find the light.” – BMO. (Adventure Time) Hi! I’m Emily- a therapist for the mystics and misfits; the creatives and cynics; the outcasts and openminded; the artistic and awkward; the hippies and the highly sensitive! If you identify as a person who struggles to feel belonging or doesn’t feel comfortable in a traditional mental health setting, then I may be a good fit for you! When you step into my office or enter into a teletherapy session with me you can expect to find yourself in a safe space filled with compassion, empathy, warmth, and probably even the use of humor at times.

I believe therapy to be a creative and dynamic process, one that explores and honors your inherent wisdom, expertise and intuition about life. My part in your journey is to support, encourage and sometimes gently challenge you to see clearly the truth about your history and its relationship to your current struggles. I strive to be attuned to issues of injustice including those related to: class, race, gender, sexual orientation and religious oppression. This endeavor called therapy is best served when we knit it together with mystery, stories, poetry and laughter.

Being a person can be hard! I'm passionate about helping clients through depression, anxiety, grief/loss, and relationship and substance use issues. If you are struggling with any of the difficult feelings of being human, I want to help! When you learn to trust your own intuition, identify your needs, and define your boundaries, you are better able to advocate for yourself and the life you want. I focus on helping each individual to make deep connections, uncover your own inner strength and wisdom, and cultivate a meaningful, fulfilling life. At times you may just need a little extra support where you're at, and I'll meet you there!

**Telehealth Available** I have often hoped that counseling could be viewed as routine as oil changes or perhaps, more pleasant: lunch. The truth is that counseling is often utilized during crises or when things feel “too much.” Maybe your experiences have led to challenges in your relationships, leaning on numbing agents to cope, having thoughts that are not typical for you, avoiding things in your life. Maybe old wounds are resurfacing or you're grieving something huge. You might not even know why you're reaching out. Anything is acceptable here. All I require from you is curiosity.

People begin seeing a therapist for many reasons--you may be experiencing overwhelming stress, feeling a sense of hopelessness or loss of meaning in your life, living with painful grief, coping with traumatic past or present events, suffering in relationships, or simply feeling "stuck." In our sessions together, you and I will explore your goals, wishes, feelings, and concerns, with the aim of moving toward natural wholeness within yourself and in your relationships with others, in an atmosphere of warmth, authenticity, and acceptance.

Alcohol Use Therapists
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
