Working with people overwhelmed by trauma , depressed, anxious, or simply stuck, is a passion of mine. Why? Because I have found in both my own life & professional experience that, paradoxically, these painful areas of our life can offer us opportunity for personal growth and understanding ourselves. To be clear, this is not easy, and takes lots of courage. It's a journey, a practice, which leads to self-compassion & a healthy way to live authentically in the world. In a relationship of trust, I will support & challenge you to find your own inner wisdom, your own answers to wholehearted living.

Everyone has mental health and it is important to take care of it. Happiness is not unlimited; however it can feel far away if you're struggling with anxiety, depression, history of trauma /chronic stress, etc. I use a strength based, relational approach for growth and am a strong believer in empowering individuals to take control of their own health & wellness and create the roots for recovery.

However, areas of special focus include parent development, adolescent development and mental health, couple's and family relationships, trauma , shame, regret and remorse, self esteem, addictions, parenting, life transitions, depression and anxiety.
Life is difficult. Feeling better is possible. We all have the right and the ability to feel some peace and acceptance about our lives; the things we can control and the things we can not. We may often believe the negative thoughts we have (that we often make up) and act accordingly. You can change your life, your outlook and the way you think and feel about yourself and your relationships. I believe changes and growth occur when an individual is able to challenge their thoughts, examine their perspectives and learn how to be true to themselves.

At Geekery and Growth I focus on working with fellow adult geeks, nerds, and misfits. As a gay geek myself, I enjoy working with the LGBTQIA2S communities, and find that there is a significant overlap between the geek and queer communities. I am also passionate about helping people who are trauma survivors learn how to build or rebuild a life that reflects who they are and what they want. Because I focus on working with adults, I currently only offer evening appointments, and because I offer appointments via telehealth, you can do therapy anywhere you have privacy and an internet connection so it is easier to fit it in your life.

Unseen and Unknown. The pain of not being seen or known can be debilitating and confusing. The experience of being seen within the therapeutic relationship is a central part of change in therapy. I assist people in learning to see themselves in a more grounded way, to learn and practice skills for manifesting core values, and to work out of the traps created by the ruptures and traumas inhibiting the experience of being integrated. I work with developmental/family of origin issues including trauma (physical, sexual, and emotional), neglect, and chemical use issues. My case load consists of individuals, couples, and families.

More than a specific trauma history or type of person, I work with people who deeply want to heal so that they work, love, create and care for others from an integrated and mindful place.
If you are reading this, you may be seeking help because despite life appearing good, even great, on the outside, you have experienced (and continue to experience) unbearable hurt and suffering internally. You may feel alone in your pain or ashamed of what has happened to you. You might be confused about why you aren’t happy despite your success. Psychoanalysis with me is an intensive process of healing where you will receive the care, support, and understanding you need to heal and move forward.

I believe my job as a therapist is to help you connect with the best version of yourself. My style is active, collaborative, understanding, and empowering. I see you as the expert of your story; and myself as an expert in guiding you through sharing your experiences in hopes of understanding what makes you who you are. When you can make sense of who you are, and what filters you may see and interact with in the world, I believe you can allow for something new to emerge. My goal is to provide a safe and inviting space for you to be able to speak your emotional truths.

I work with adults who may be going through a difficult life transition, have had relationship problems, domestic violence, childhood abuse, trauma , chronic pain or other problems related to mental health or substance use.
Starting psychotherapy can be anxiety-producing but I do my best to make all my clients feel comfortable and at ease. Life can be overwhelming and most of us do not have the support to cope with life challenges. I am emphatic, honest and responsible, and open to working with clients from diverse backgrounds, religions, and sexual orientations. I think of psychoanalysis as a profound journey to understanding oneself. Its purpose is to help people to understand feelings, behaviors, and habits that are troubling to them and to enrich their lives with new creativity, more fulfilling careers, and more meaningful relationships.

I am interested in the intersection between historical, social and personal trauma .
I am a white, ciswoman, eager to work with adults interested in integrating Somatic Experiencing work into psychotherapy, a body based trauma therapy. If you recognize that your personal struggles are connected to the pervasive impact of the social, political, structural and power dynamics in which we live, working on that connection can be powerful. Embodied psychotherapy can be helful if you are feeling stuck and flat, or anxious and feel like you can't turn off, or if you flip back and forth between anxious and despairing. I hope to support your natural resilience so you can move through the stressors of life with more ease.

I have over 15 years of experience working with men and women struggling with anxiety and depression, substance use disorders, trauma / PTSD and eating disorders.
**Not currently taking new clients** I work with clients experiencing life-interfering symptoms such as anxiety, depression/despair, compulsivity, loneliness, relationship distress, uncertainty, fear and hopelessness. Causes may include traumatic events, addiction, psychosocial stressors, and serious and persistent mental illness. Ineffective coping and ultimately a breakdown in the balanced quality of life and freedom that each of us deserve is often the result. My approach is to join with you in the areas where compassionate understanding, intention, and work are needed to live the most optimal life possible.

My areas of specialty include GLBTQ individuals; recovery from trauma ; and aftermath of suicide for family and significant others.
Every person's experience in therapy is unique. I know that my 20+ years of experience, the ongoing training I consistently pursue and the areas in which I have particular expertise are important factors to the people who come to see me. I create a safe and compassionate environment so individuals and couples can freely express their questions and needs. Beyond those critical pieces, I believe that the success of the therapy will rest on our ability to work together in an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust.

I combine a practical, solution-focused approach with effective trauma treatments called EMDR and Somatic Experiencing (SE).
I help people learn to feel worthy of love, so they can have the loving relationships that they crave. You live with the feeling of needing to hide your true self from others, the fear that eventually everyone will realize that you aren't good enough and leave you, or the feeling of being broken beyond repair. Don't feel like this forever. I am committed to sharing compassion, acceptance, and honesty as I walk with you to find joy in the present. My specialty is helping people work through trauma , sexual concerns, and relationship distress.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
