Clients I see are looking to recover from misattuned parenting or difficult families, to improve their relationships, to decrease fear, and to problem-solve here-and-now tasks of daily living. People often begin therapy while in the midst of a transition, or after a long period of knowing they should, or because they want to engage in deeper, more long-lasting psychodynamic work. Nervousness in the beginning is expected - those feelings can be explored and worked with. In fact, whatever we can identify that comes up in you or between us in session we can try to understand together - this is the nature of psychodynamic psychotherapy.

I believe most individuals are much stronger than they realize, and possess an inner wisdom and resilience from which they are currently disconnected. Life is hard. And it is perfectly normal to struggle with anxiety, depression, and stress when facing upheavals and transitions. Tremendous change and growth is often possible through adjustments in lifestyle and thinking patterns, and the tapping into inner resources that are presently underutilized.

Life presents inevitable challenges. Problems are problems. People are not problems. I will work alongside you to be curious and draw out your innate knowing and expertise. You share in my belief in the power of metaphor and meaning-making as a healing medium. This may include creative processes with art materials or it can be through "talk therapy" as well. We will work as collaborators to achieve greater self-awareness that allows you to move forward with confidence, less fear, self judgement and criticism.

Hello! I am Amanda. I am a bi-racial, African American identifying female. I chose Social Work because I have always been a helper, the one people could rely on when they needed someone to listen to them. I have always been super social; I have loved learning about other people and their life experiences. I love connecting with people, and being a therapist allows me to do that while being an asset to their personal growth.

Do you feel like a stranger in a strange land, lost and confused? You don't need to go it alone. I specialize in providing culturally appropriate psychological and cognitive assessments and psychotherapy. I believe I have two jobs, first to listen, really listen with wisdom and compassion to my clients to find out what is going on, what is causing the struggles, what can be done to address the problems and what are my client's core strengths. My second job is helping my clients once again experience those core strengths.

I consider it an honor to be allowed entry into someone's life as a therapist. People come to me when some suffering or limitation has opened them up enough to ask a perfect stranger for help. My hope is to provide a safe and respectful place for them to begin to look at the various strands of their lives and stories. Then, as we unravel past and present contributions to the fabric of their lives, we can examine these threads and, with new understanding, weave them back together into a new tapestry which includes fresh possibilities.

Maybe you have a sense of what life could be like if you were truly expressing yourself without fear or shame. Maybe you haven’t even let yourself dream about what that could look like—just yet. Maybe there are barriers in the way and you don’t know how to navigate through them. This is where I can be of help. I work with creative folks to more fully embrace their identities and better understand how their past impacts their present moment. I focus on social identity development, (ie gender, sexuality, etc) and sex therapy through a trauma-informed lens. Let’s work together so that you can cultivate a life that celebrates you!

Hello! My name is Kalyn! I am a first-generation college student. I am aiming to remove barriers about mental health within the African American community. When working with neurodivergent, LGBTQIA+, and young adult clients, I don't shy away from those who struggle with traditional power dynamics and authority. I embrace clients’ need for their autonomy to be respected and honored in our sessions. I have a genuine curiosity to learn about others’ experiences, and a desire to co-create with my clients what our sessions will look and feel like. I enjoy working with both young adults and adults who are struggling to find their identity, those who have experienced trauma or attachment disruptions, and autistic clients- particularly those with PDA traits.

I'm not the stereotypical, notes on a clipboard, "how do you feel about that?" kind of therapist. I'm the warm, casual, quirky kind of therapist. I will show up authentically and welcome you to do the same. Are you into sarcasm, dark humor, or swearing? I'm here for you. Are you reserved, nervous, sensitive, shy, or tearful? I'm here for you, too! I believe therapy isn't just about the bad or difficult things - but all of who you are. I want our sessions to be a space for you to share your story, laugh, process, build skills, cry, problem-solve, vent, or just talk about what's on your mind. Therapy is whatever you need it to be!

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
