Life throws us various challenges. Sometimes these challenges come in the form of a life transition, an interpersonal conflict, or a persistent mental health concern. Therapy offers us an opportunity to explore these challenges and move through them in an intentional manner.

We are all capable, and deserving, of rich, vibrant, lives. However, trauma, anxiety, substance use, eating disorders, and other mental health challenges can serve as barriers to the embodiment of the highest expression of ourselves. My hope is that as clients join with me to manage mental health symptoms and experience healing, a life of happiness and contentment is achieved.

People come to therapy for many reasons—some in search of deeper self-understanding, others to make sense of longstanding pain in their relationships or inner life. Above all, people come to experience some form of relief, change, and/or greater aliveness. My approach is rooted in psychodynamic principles and I work collaboratively and thoughtfully, drawing on my extensive clinical training as well as my values of warmth, curiosity, humility, and humor. Together, we will create a space where the complexities of your emotional world can be safely explored, so that new insight—and new ways of being—can emerge.

Hi! I am the owner of Kos Counseling, and have been working in the mental health field for 19 years with an emphasis on serving LGBTQ and BIPOC folks. I see clients of all ages, but focus on working with young adults and teens. I help people to learn to cope with anxiety, depression, trauma, and other symptoms while also getting more connected to themselves. I also help people navigate difficult relationships (family, friends, partners) in more productive ways. Sessions with me are filled with compassion, openness, realistic optimism, and a mix of sitting with the hardest emotions while also creating space to laugh.

We all learn through early relationships and experiences how to communicate with others and ourselves, and how to cope and engage with our reality—-whatever that may be. Sometimes over the course of our lives, what we’ve learned no longer serves us and our needs. I believe that therapy serves as a space to become aware of who we’ve been and who we want to be, while engaging in new and healthy dynamics. These things are all part of life and they ebb and flow. I view therapy as an ever-evolving process with my goal being to get to the root cause of symptoms.

I strive to create a collaborative, non-judgemental space to address immediate concerns and grow self-understanding. An important part of that process is building a therapeutic relationship, one where you feel safe and can speak freely. I see my role as a thought partner helping you grow your internal awareness and trust in yourself. Together, we'll explore how certain life experiences have shaped patterns of relating to yourself and others, contributed to worries, distress, and internal conflict. This is an individualized approach intended to facilitate meaningful change.

Shout-out to all the folks curious about interrupting the unhepfuls, navigating the unexpecteds, and accepting the uncontrollables; welcome! To squeeze my therapeutic style into a few-ish words, it’s a mix of straight-forwardly-laidback, relationally-focused, & expressive. Oftentimes, the universe seems to enjoy throwing curveballs right when life starts to settle. I join clients the exploration of strengthening into their authentic selves through that process. I currently provide individual and couples therapy.

I specialize in working with adults who are looking for a space to learn about and feel compassion towards themselves. I became a therapist because of the inherent value I believe that being seen, known, and held by another can provide. I understand the significance of and deeply value the therapeutic relationship, which I believe is one of the most powerful tools for change. I use warmth, humility, humor, and empathy to approach my clients. I often work with adults coping with depression, anxiety, grief, the after-effects of trauma, perinatal and postpartum concerns, and familial and relationship issues.

Each life is incredible with so many different and unique experiences with some pleasant and/or unpleasant, some easily making sense and/or some convoluted. All of these experiences are meaningful. Growing on a farm around a beautiful coastal area and experiencing many challenges directly and indirectly, I have had wonderful opportunities to learn the value of life for every living being and to realize, despite challenges, its willingness to put in the best effort for its life. I believe every living being has the right to pursue the life that we want with good intentions and willingness to put on best foot forward.

As a therapist, I practice with the mentality that ‘all parts are welcome.’ Every person has many unique ‘parts’ based on their experiences, natural temperaments, and relationships with others. Each of your parts is important and deserves to be heard, even the parts you struggle with or cause problems in life. In therapy, we will build a relationship so that you feel safe to talk about all of the parts that make you, you. It’s my job to be curious, notice patterns, and process alongside you. Together, we will work towards developing inner harmony and self-awareness.

I have a special interest in working with women in areas of self-esteem, assertiveness, sexual wellbeing, perfectionism, and co-dependency.
I deeply believe in the value of human relationships, the power of empathy, and I see people as experts of their own lives. While I have been trained in a variety of theoretical frameworks, I use different approaches to best fit the needs of my clients; though a few of my favorite modalities are emotionally focus therapy, interpersonal, and CBT.

A deep connection between therapist and client is key to forming the trust necessary to overcome challenges in one's life. These blocks keep us from realizing our potential and can manifest in a variety of ways, from depression and anxiety, to relationship issues and job dissatisfaction. My approach to therapy is to use self understanding and awareness as a mechanism for change. Treatments could include psychoanalytic and psychodynamic techniques to access unconscious material or a more problem focused, short term approach depending on the issues at hand. I also work with Trauma using EMDR.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
