I work with those experiencing concerns around anxiety, depression , adjustment/life transition, trauma, body image, and relational difficulties.
*Limited availability* I collaborate with my clients to identify and examine their unique life narratives and how those narratives inform their life experiences and relationships. Together, we will explore the unique barriers you face and we will work together to minimize the impact of those barriers, practice new ways of thinking and behaving, and create new life narratives. **I will move to Iowa City to pursue a Ph.D. Counseling Psychology degree during July 2022.**

Hi! I am the owner of Kos Counseling, and have been working in the mental health field for 19 years with an emphasis on serving LGBTQ and BIPOC folks. I see clients of all ages, but focus on working with young adults and teens. I help people to learn to cope with anxiety, depression , trauma, and other symptoms while also getting more connected to themselves. I also help people navigate difficult relationships (family, friends, partners) in more productive ways. Sessions with me are filled with compassion, openness, realistic optimism, and a mix of sitting with the hardest emotions while also creating space to laugh.

I work with men and women facing both the 'big' and the seemingly common issues of life. 'Big' life changes like a cancer diagnosis or a partner experiencing dementia; 'Life' issues like relationships, grief/loss, anxiety, anger, depression , persistent feelings of sadness, job difficulties, retirement challenges and more. Those who work with me soon come to appreciate the value of being heard; of being seen and accepted-despite the sharp edges that may appear as we try to protect ourselves from the pain the world sometimes presents us.

I will work with you in a collaborative relationship to broaden your understanding of yourself and the things that are not working in your life. We will look at difficulties that you experience (such as anxiety, depression , relationship problems, job stress, and general life dissatisfaction) and understand these concerns in the context of current circumstances as well as their origins. Through in-depth therapy you will gain insight into these problems in order to make different choices. We will work to illuminate patterns of behavior and belief systems that interfere with your current life, and help you to tolerate difficult feelings.

I have worked with people suffering from depression , anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, relationship issues, sexual issues, personality disorders, and many more.
I know no one who is "accidentally" in counseling or therapy. Thus, this step and this choice is often quite difficult. I embrace building rapport with my clients in a way that allows us to engage in a collaboration of unique, innovative and effective techniques to overcome the challenges, problems and/or difficulties they are facing, whether in their social, personal, or business life. I take pride in listening to my clients and trying to provide them thoughtful tools they can use long after our sessions are complete.

I help people with many issues from depression and anxiety to workplace and relationship concerns.
Finding the right therapist is important. You want someone you can feel comfortable with, who understands your life experiences and really "gets" you. Research demonstrates that it's the quality of this relationship, more than any other factor, that makes therapy successful. To see if I might be the right therapist for you, you can read more about my approach and what it might be like to work with me at www.wittenbergconsult.com. That will help you decide if we might be a good fit.

An area that I have been incorporating more into my practice is guided imagery, which research has shown to give a person a greater sense of control, increased self confidence, assistance with fear, panic, anxiety, helplessness, trauma, loss, and grief, and a decrease in depression , stress, and pain.
*Please email about availability* Therapy is not surgery; you don't go to sleep and wake up with all of your problems solved. The sweat and strain and heavy lifting are mostly yours. But with this, however, you can feel more satisfied with therapy when actively involved in the sessions. It is my role to work with your motivation & continue to foster this growth towards positive change. I operate from a person-centered approach, which emphasizes being genuine, providing unconditional positive regard, and empathic understanding in the efforts to foster our therapeutic connection to enhance this emotional & powerful relationship.

I work with adults experiencing depression , anxiety, trauma, life transitions, relationship difficulties, identity concerns and other stressors.
I believe the process of therapy is about the therapist and client joining together in a collaborative effort to work toward goals. Every person has strengths and values that are essential to living their best possible life. Sometimes obstacles get in the way of living those values and recognizing our strengths, including family, trauma, health concerns, and mental health difficulties. Through a systemic and trauma-informed lens, we will create individualized goals and approaches that best meet your needs.

Depression Therapists
Depressive disorders are characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and worthlessness and a lack of desire to engage in formerly pleasurable activities. Depression is not a passing blue mood, which almost everyone experiences from time to time, but a complex mind/body illness that interferes with everyday functioning. It not only darkens one's outlook, it is commonly marked by sleep problems and changes in energy levels and appetite. It alters the structure and function of nerve cells so that it disrupts the way the brain processes information and interprets experience.

Despite feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness, depression is a treatable condition. It can be treated with psychotherapy. As with many illnesses, the earlier treatment begins, the more effective it can be and the greater the likelihood that recurrence can be prevented.

Psychotherapy addresses the thinking patterns that precipitate depression, and studies show that it prevents recurrence. Drug therapy is often helpful in relieving symptoms, such as severe anxiety, so that people can engage in meaningful psychotherapy.
