Clients see me for a magnitude of concerns such as anxiety disorders, depression, anger management, issues of identity, and self-esteem. I particularly enjoy working with teenagers and young adults because these two age groups experience many life changes that therapy can help them navigate. As a psychotherapist, my goal is to create a safe and comfortable space for you to process, explore, and gain insight into many of your experiences. Whether or not this is your first experience in therapy, I will take the time to get to know you, and our work together will start from where you currently are.

Hi! I am the owner of Kos Counseling, and have been working in the mental health field for 19 years with an emphasis on serving LGBTQ and BIPOC folks. I see clients of all ages, but focus on working with young adults and teens. I help people to learn to cope with anxiety , depression, trauma, and other symptoms while also getting more connected to themselves. I also help people navigate difficult relationships (family, friends, partners) in more productive ways. Sessions with me are filled with compassion, openness, realistic optimism, and a mix of sitting with the hardest emotions while also creating space to laugh.

*Limited availability* I collaborate with my clients to identify and examine their unique life narratives and how those narratives inform their life experiences and relationships. Together, we will explore the unique barriers you face and we will work together to minimize the impact of those barriers, practice new ways of thinking and behaving, and create new life narratives. **I will move to Iowa City to pursue a Ph.D. Counseling Psychology degree during July 2022.**

Is anxiety or experiences from your past making it feel like life is out of control? Maybe you’re caught in a spiral of dread or stress you can’t seem to stop, constantly second-guessing yourself and not knowing how to cope. Or maybe you’re frustrated and exhausted by it all: feeling like you’ve done everything you know to do to get “over” it, but still feeling triggered or on edge all the time. You might be seeing patterns in your relationships that you want to change or wondering what’s going on under the surface that’s causing you to continue to feel this way.

I work with men and women facing both the 'big' and the seemingly common issues of life. 'Big' life changes like a cancer diagnosis or a partner experiencing dementia; 'Life' issues like relationships, grief/loss, anxiety , anger, depression, persistent feelings of sadness, job difficulties, retirement challenges and more. Those who work with me soon come to appreciate the value of being heard; of being seen and accepted-despite the sharp edges that may appear as we try to protect ourselves from the pain the world sometimes presents us.

I will work with you in a collaborative relationship to broaden your understanding of yourself and the things that are not working in your life. We will look at difficulties that you experience (such as anxiety , depression, relationship problems, job stress, and general life dissatisfaction) and understand these concerns in the context of current circumstances as well as their origins. Through in-depth therapy you will gain insight into these problems in order to make different choices. We will work to illuminate patterns of behavior and belief systems that interfere with your current life, and help you to tolerate difficult feelings.

I help people with many issues from depression and anxiety to workplace and relationship concerns.
Finding the right therapist is important. You want someone you can feel comfortable with, who understands your life experiences and really "gets" you. Research demonstrates that it's the quality of this relationship, more than any other factor, that makes therapy successful. To see if I might be the right therapist for you, you can read more about my approach and what it might be like to work with me at www.wittenbergconsult.com. That will help you decide if we might be a good fit.

I believe you are the authority on your own life. Within you exists the potential to express your authentic self and to live a fulfilling life. However, there are times in our lives when we may experience stress, depression, anxiety , anger, or complacency. When this happens it can be difficult to manage our lives effectively and with peace of mind. This is when professional support can be helpful. Whatever concerns you are struggling with, I will collaborate with you to help you identify your goals and develop a treatment approach to empower you to realize them.

I have worked with people suffering from depression, anxiety , obsessive compulsive disorder, relationship issues, sexual issues, personality disorders, and many more.
I know no one who is "accidentally" in counseling or therapy. Thus, this step and this choice is often quite difficult. I embrace building rapport with my clients in a way that allows us to engage in a collaboration of unique, innovative and effective techniques to overcome the challenges, problems and/or difficulties they are facing, whether in their social, personal, or business life. I take pride in listening to my clients and trying to provide them thoughtful tools they can use long after our sessions are complete.

I have helped individuals struggling with depression, anxiety , ADHD, attachment, oppositional, grief and loss, divorce, infidelity, abuse and trauma.
Congratulations on your first step towards healing and growth. The thought of therapy can be overwhelming and empowering at the same time. Life is full of transitions, some of them are by our choice, others are imposed on us. I have had the privilege of hearing peoples stories and helping them gain insight and tools along their journey to a more satisfying sense of self and life.

We work with individuals of all ages with anxiety , mood and related issues across the lifespan. When working with younger children, we meet with parents without the child for the first evaluation session, and then meet with the child individually during the second evaluation session. Our center also routinely works with college-aged and young adult clients. Here, our therapists incorporate components of therapy geared specifically to this age group: identity development, fostering independence and autonomy, and helping clients navigate the challenges experienced during their transition into adulthood.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
