As a professional music director and teacher, I am committed to collaboratively and creatively work through musicians' stage fright and performance anxiety .
I provide individual and couples psychotherapy to a variety of clients. I am particularly interested in working with people going through life transitions including divorce, break-ups, job loss, career exploration and grief. Through deep listening and curiosity, I create a safe space to openly examine and gain insight into their challenges, helping them to relieve stress and achieve a sense of wellbeing. Using strategies from narrative, solution-focused, cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness therapies, my sessions are an opportunity to nurture my clients' positive personal growth and change.

Through the process of psychotherapy, I work together with my clients to help them: develop a better understanding of their histories, triggers and patterns in order to get unstuck and create new endings to old stories; build coping skills and capacity for resiliency in order to face stressors and fears that are blocking growth; learn to live authentically in order to create a life congruent with what matters to them. I feel passionate about my work. I always hope to help people realize their worth and competency so they can feel empowered to take charge of their lives and live with more purpose and fulfillment.

However, areas of special focus include parent development, adolescent development and mental health, couple's and family relationships, trauma, shame, regret and remorse, self esteem, addictions, parenting, life transitions, depression and anxiety .
Life is difficult. Feeling better is possible. We all have the right and the ability to feel some peace and acceptance about our lives; the things we can control and the things we can not. We may often believe the negative thoughts we have (that we often make up) and act accordingly. You can change your life, your outlook and the way you think and feel about yourself and your relationships. I believe changes and growth occur when an individual is able to challenge their thoughts, examine their perspectives and learn how to be true to themselves.

You can grow through crisis and challenge! As a psychologist and family therapist I am interested in the family dynamics that have contributed to the issues my clients are facing. I'm especially interested in couples' issues because it's such a challenge to live with someone who inevitably brings up your issues. I'm a seasoned therapist, originally trained as a music therapist, who works with a wide range of issues from personal coaching to parenting, from depression/ anxiety to spiritual growth. My view is that every crisis and difficult issue is an opportunity for personal growth.

Though I work with a variety of clients, I specialize in working with LGBTQ+ individuals, especially on themes of identity, relationships, and anxiety .
I believe everyone longs to live a meaningful, full life. I know for me, there have been times that this felt out of reach and difficult to imagine. I help people who feel anxious, disconnected, and confused connect with themselves and a sense of meaning in their life. When this connection is restored I've seen strong feelings of uncertainty, doubt, and fear transform into confidence, hope, and creativity.

I've been privileged to sit w/each client as they muster courage to face fears , trust people again, often grappling with addictions or old learned patterns.
Working with people overwhelmed by trauma, depressed, anxious, or simply stuck, is a passion of mine. Why? Because I have found in both my own life & professional experience that, paradoxically, these painful areas of our life can offer us opportunity for personal growth and understanding ourselves. To be clear, this is not easy, and takes lots of courage. It's a journey, a practice, which leads to self-compassion & a healthy way to live authentically in the world. In a relationship of trust, I will support & challenge you to find your own inner wisdom, your own answers to wholehearted living.

Therapy is a relational dynamic process. I work to create a nurturing, compassionate, safe space that honors individual healing processes. My integrative holistic approach to psychotherapy means that I combine attachment theory, neuroscience, cognitive behavioral theory, and psychodynamic theory with the wisdom and insights from mindfulness-based practices, creative expression, and nature. Working with me, you will gain insight into your emotional world, understand how you work, learn what gives you comfort and contentment during difficult times, develop new coping skills to help during times of anxiety /depression, and make changes in your life so you can live more fully.

I believe my job as a therapist is to help you connect with the best version of yourself. My style is active, collaborative, understanding, and empowering. I see you as the expert of your story; and myself as an expert in guiding you through sharing your experiences in hopes of understanding what makes you who you are. When you can make sense of who you are, and what filters you may see and interact with in the world, I believe you can allow for something new to emerge. My goal is to provide a space for you to speak your emotional truths in hopes of living and loving in a more whole-hearted way.

"To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly". The therapeutic relationship is a partnership between two people who endeavor to co-create change. I have helped clients examine a wide range of issues (relational conflict, workplace difficulties, eating disorders, body image distress, addictions, trauma, spirituality, gender identity, aging, grief and loss, and sexual orientation). We will work together to alleviate your most pressing problems as well as develop a fuller understanding of the underlying issues that keep you stuck in emotional patterns that limit your capacity to enjoy the quality of life you desire.

I provide a safe and secure environment where you can feel safe to share deeply personal thoughts and feelings. My psychodynamic process requires both courage and motivation to change. You will move from where you are to where you want to be. Initial concerns may be about self esteem, work or relationships but effective psychodynamic process identifies hidden patterns and themes that cloud the present and hinder the future. Patients describe the process as "empowering" and "life changing", leaving them with increased energy, confidence and creativity for their lives.

Together we attend to concerns and uncertainties, “what ifs”, and possibilities for enduring change. We work with intention to make possible the softening of stress, fear, or worry. We watch for the budding return of relief, clarity, ease, and hope. Potential shifts make possible the lessening of physical symptoms, as well as allowing for fear to settle; for intimacy, creativity, and inspiration to flourish; for thinking to clear and decisions to be made, action taken, and a deep sense of aliveness felt.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
