Looking for a therapist who gets you? Finding the right fit makes all the difference, but what a daunting, exhausting task. So here's my pitch: I believe in meeting you where you are without judgment and remaining flexible in my approach. I prioritize straightforward communication so we can make adjustments that work for you. If you are navigating grief, anxiety, depression, burnout, low self-esteem, or are just feeling stuck, let's talk. But we are more than our issues, so here's who tends to connect well with my approach: animal lovers, child-free folks, secular thinkers, introverts, planners, and out-of-state transplants.

I have experience working with a culturally diverse population of individuals. My clients range from age 6 to age 65. Most of my experience is working with children, teens, young adults, adults, and families. I believe the greatest success is to accompany the client on their journey and to be the guide to navigate through the challenges of life. I regard the client to be the expert in their lives and it is important for them to discuss their goals and their expectations. My clients who experience the greatest success are motivated and ready to work, open-minded, flexible, introspective, honest, and trusting.

I believe one of the bravest things you can do is better understand your own story. Working through your past allows you to better understand your patterns, beliefs, and strengths to optimize where you are headed. Too often in life, we experience events that silence us, making it hard to know where to turn. In my office, I work hard to create and hold space for my clients rooted in compassion, empathy, and safety. No matter where you are in your journey, I believe everyone has the potential to find more peace and live closer to their authentic beings.

People that sit with me often ask some version of: Why does this keep happening? Why am I still having the same fight, feeling the same disconnect, or ending up in the same place again? Sometimes it looks like conflict. Sometimes it looks like shutting down, frustration, loneliness, or feeling misunderstood in relationships that matter to you. It can be parenting and realizing you’re reacting in ways you swore you wouldn’t. Sometimes it’s just the exhaustion of overthinking everything and not knowing why it still feels this hard.

I have over 25 years experience working with people harmed by domestic, sexual and childhood violence from crisis intervention to addressing reoccuring emotional distress.
Does your heart beat too fast at unexpected times? Is there a whirlwind of emotion that you can't quite grasp? Does it feel like your struggling to survive? Many of us have been taught to "keep on" no matter what adversity we've experienced and often without the help we need. Are you attempting to navigate a world that doesn't make sense or align with your values? Are you caring for everyone else before you can get to your own needs? These experiences can cause anxiety, depression, irritability and even justified anger. I can help you process your experience(s), cope with your sadness, and find healing from trauma. Joy is possible.

I'm Venus Burney; I am a mom, a caregiver, and a black woman, and of the Christian faith. I welcome people of any faith or spiritual belief system. I am encouraging, insightful, and identity affirming. I believe that people do not have to share the same beliefs to be affirmed, and respected. The world is a rocky place, with many ravines and hills that can make it challenging at best to navigate, but it's doable. I lead with integrity and with will work to explore paths and processes that bring about hope and change for those who are seeking it. If you're up to do the work, I'll come along side you.

Intervention Therapists
How does an intervention work?
An intervention is a planned, structured meeting in which a person’s family or friends voice concerns about the person’s behavior and its consequences; the goal is for the person to accept treatment. In this meeting, the person’s loved ones (often with the guidance of a trained interventionist) share how the person’s behavior has harmed them and the consequences if the person refuses treatment. They collectively ask the person to accept a proposed treatment plan.

How effective are interventions?
There isn’t extensive research on the efficacy of interventions, in part because success is difficult to measure. Individuals often enter addiction treatment after an intervention, for example, but treatment itself may not work, especially if the person only begins due to external pressure from others rather than due to internal motivation to change. However, if all other attempts at helping someone have failed, an intervention may be worth exploring.

What are the limitations of interventions?
While a friend or family member’s intentions are in the right place in wanting to help a loved one through an intervention, there are significant limitations to the approach. The surprising nature of the event can make the person feel ambushed or judged. They may feel embarrassed or ashamed as a result, and relationships may be strained or broken. This can make it difficult for the individual to be receptive to the concerns of their loved ones and the interventionist.

Are there alternatives to interventions?
Rather than confronting a loved one through an intervention, an effective and less pressured approach is to create space for a caring, open, one-on-one conversation. This works best if the loved one asks open-ended questions, listens attentively to the answers, and frames their observations and statements with concern rather than judgment. More than one conversation may be needed, but change can take root over time.
