I am trained in Experiential Play Therapy and Filial Play Therapy for children, and am a Certified Sexual
Assault
Advocate.
I believe we all have the inner power and intuitive knowledge to change, but our intuition can get blocked when strong emotions or past events overwhelm us. Working to establish a partnership of genuineness, trust, and respect for this self-knowledge, I teach tools to calm anxieties, break through fears, renew hope, and increase self-understanding. Mindfulness, relaxation, and visual art techniques, as well as play therapy with children, are often part of this process.

I work with adult survivors of childhood trauma who are noticing or are curious to explore the ways in which their trauma are impacting their experiences in the present day. I find that many of the things we struggle with can be related to traumas, difficulties, or other experiences in childhood that were less than ideal. I help my clients recognize the ways in which they are feeling "stuck" or are unhappy with how their life circumstances are. From there, I help my clients determine how they want to live their life and we collaboratively figure out what it takes to get there.

I work primarily with adolescent and adult clients that have experienced various traumatic events in their lives. Often times individuals are unaware of the impact that these events have had and continue to have on their day to day lives. I work with individuals to help them learn more about what events are traumatic to them and increase their awareness of how those events continue to impact relationships, work performance, school performance, etc. I am dedicated to helping my clients identify their goals and teach them skills to reach these goals while learning how to navigate and manage life circumstances.

It’s not always easy to ask for help, but we all have times in our life where we need someone to come along side of us and provide support, insight, and care. My goal is to make that an easy step for adults and adolescents who are ready to begin doing the work of therapy. Whether you are processing past pain, navigating new mental health symptoms, or looking ahead to life transitions, I aim to create a safe space to process through difficult and sometimes messy emotions and take practical steps toward whole-person wellness.

My heart's desire is for everyone to connect with their innate love, joy, and peace. I believe love and joy are always present within us, they are just often hidden under layers of pain and misunderstanding. Together, we can peel back the layers and bring back your vitality. I love to listen and ask questions, which helps clients get clear on who they are, what they want, and where they are going! You are safe to share your complete (sometimes tangled) truth with me. Tears, laughter, growls, and silence are welcome.

Are you struggling with emotional and/or relationship issues and not sure how to deal with them? Seeking help is not easy and I recognize it takes courage to take that first step to reach out to a professional. For that reason, I use gentle, compassionate, and affirming methods to create a safe environment and work at a pace that is most comfortable to you. Sometimes it’s easy to talk about the issues and at other times, it feels too private or painful to reveal. When memories are too painful to share I can even work with them silently. I also incorporate many holistic approaches, honoring the mind, body and spirit connection.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
