The journey to emotional health begins with discovering and nurturing the authentic self. When we make choices that are inconsistent with who we are, our ability to participate in life, to love and work is compromised. This can often lead to avoiding the things that truly matter to us causing us to feel
depressed
or anxious. When this happens, we tend to avoid more. And the cycle continues. In my work, I help clients (ages 16+) re-engage with life focusing on their values and what matters most to them.

I have experience working with a wide variety of issues including chronic feelings of anxiety and
depression
, grief and loss, difficult life transitions, and general feelings of existential angst in which one may simply be seeking a greater sense of meaning or purpose in life.
I provide individual therapy for adults and older teens. I work with my clients to develop a genuine connection based on trust, honesty, support, and compassion. I recognize and honor people as individuals and meet them where they are, helping them navigate the many struggles they may face in their unique journey through life. Working together, we will address the issues that are affecting you and/or those you care about and develop a plan to overcome them. Throughout this process, my clients gain a stronger and deeper connection with themselves and the world around them.

I support you--an adult, a teen, or the child you love--overcome the suffering associated with anxiety,
depression
, grief, ADHD, poor self-regulation, anger management, a negative self-image, lack of motivation, the effect of unresolved past experiences, challenging transitions, living and aging well with or without serious health concerns, and the frustration and hopelessness parents, partners, and children of all ages often feel communicating in families with entrenched in high conflict, power-over relationship patterns. I facilitate your path toward a more positive future with trauma sensitive evidence based practices.

I treat women who experience stress, anxiety, and
depression
from current difficult relationships and complicated family histories.
Do you consider yourself a people pleaser? Is it hard to prioritize yourself without feeling guilty? Do you struggle to say no or tell people how you really feel? Are you trying to heal from emotional wounds from a loved one? Many of my clients say they feel stuck in a difficult relationship with their parent, spouse, or other loved one. They feel the stress, frustration, and resentment building but they "don't like confrontation" so they become exhausted and have little hope that things can change. They suffer from low self-esteem, overwhelm, and indecisiveness.

I am experienced in helping others work through challenges some including
depression
, anxiety, relationship difficulties and life change.
If you are reading this, then some part of you is ready. Perhaps ready to move on, to understand more or to do things differently. Our problems, when given our attention, often become gateways for needed change. Trust yourself and start talking. Therapy is something you do when you care about yourself and your life. Although current evidence-based treatments are the foundation of my work I value a mind-body connection and offer a holistic and integrative approach to therapy.

These approaches are helpful for issues such as stress,
depression
, anxiety, sexual or physical violence, PTSD, grief and loss, chronic pain, early attachment injuries, or childhood trauma.
Are you struggling with emotional and/or relationship issues and not sure how to deal with them? Seeking help is not easy and I recognize it takes courage to take that first step to reach out to a professional. For that reason, I use gentle, compassionate, and affirming methods to create a safe environment and work at a pace that is most comfortable to you. Sometimes it’s easy to talk about the issues and at other times, it feels too private or painful to reveal. When memories are too painful to share I can even work with them silently. I also incorporate many holistic approaches, honoring the mind, body and spirit connection.

When times are challenging, you may not feel like you have the energy or strength to navigate challenges or be your true self. You may be experiencing anxiety and/or
depression
symptoms that make it difficult to function daily. You may want to learn new coping techniques because the ones you know and have implemented are not effective. I currently work with adults (18+) who are experiencing
depression
and/or anxiety symptoms and apply CBT and DBT-based approaches through person-centered talk-therapy. If you want to be seen, heard, and understood, contact me through the email or phone number provided.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
