It’s not always easy to ask for help, but we all have times in our life where we need someone to come along side of us and provide support, insight, and care. My goal is to make that an easy step for adults and adolescents who are ready to begin doing the work of therapy. Whether you are processing past pain , navigating new mental health symptoms, or looking ahead to life transitions, I aim to create a safe space to process through difficult and sometimes messy emotions and take practical steps toward whole-person wellness.

If you are reading this, then some part of you is ready. Perhaps ready to move on, to understand more or to do things differently. Our problems, when given our attention, often become gateways for needed change. Trust yourself and start talking. Therapy is something you do when you care about yourself and your life. Although current evidence-based treatments are the foundation of my work I value a mind-body connection and offer a holistic and integrative approach to therapy.

I teach practical and research based tools that help manage anxiety and depression. Therapy helps manage current levels of distress as well as underlying unresolved pain from the past. I encourage the process of developing an authentic and integrated relationship to one's self and others. At the same time, I often give direct advice. I have provided psychotherapy for over 23-years and believe it works! I am aware that most people seek therapy after having had many attempts to address their symptoms alone and remained confused. I want to join you in the journey of healing and growth.

My areas of special interest include: coping with chronic illness or health concerns; those struggling with alcohol or substance use; preparing for surgery; finding meaning in our experiences; & empowering you to be vulnerable and to grow.
As a therapist, my goal is to allow you to be who you are right now, using a lot of empathy (and well-meaning humor) as well as structure and direction, when necessary. My approach is one of curiosity about you and your ideal self and future. I am typically pretty direct in my approach, which people tend to really appreciate and enjoy! Working together, we will identify and collaborate on goals and how to move you towards them. I would be honored to assist you on your health and wellness journey. These approaches are helpful for issues such as stress, depression, anxiety, sexual or physical violence, PTSD, grief and loss, chronic pain , early attachment injuries, or childhood trauma.
Are you struggling with emotional and/or relationship issues and not sure how to deal with them? Seeking help is not easy and I recognize it takes courage to take that first step to reach out to a professional. For that reason, I use gentle, compassionate, and affirming methods to create a safe environment and work at a pace that is most comfortable to you. Sometimes it’s easy to talk about the issues and at other times, it feels too private or painful to reveal. When memories are too painful to share I can even work with them silently. I also incorporate many holistic approaches, honoring the mind, body and spirit connection.

My work at Innovative Psychological Consultants has taught me that life is full of twists and turns. Sometimes no amount of training can prepare you for what comes. When you find yourself overwhelmed and confused, it can be useful to talk things through with a neutral person who can help organize your thoughts, explore your feelings, and work collaboratively to create solutions and next steps.

I support you--an adult, a teen, or the child you love--overcome the suffering associated with anxiety, depression, grief, ADHD, poor self-regulation, anger management, a negative self-image, lack of motivation, the effect of unresolved past experiences, challenging transitions, living and aging well with or without serious health concerns, and the frustration and hopelessness parents, partners, and children of all ages often feel communicating in families with entrenched in high conflict, power-over relationship patterns. I facilitate your path toward a more positive future with trauma sensitive evidence based practices.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
