I also work with parents to find the best system of continuity for their children and assist with any parental coaching that may be needed so that kids are thriving with parental consistency and follow through.

I support you--an adult, a
teen
, or the child you love--overcome the suffering associated with anxiety, depression, grief, ADHD, poor self-regulation, anger management, a negative self-image, lack of motivation, the effect of unresolved past experiences, challenging transitions, living and aging well with or without serious health concerns, and the frustration and hopelessness parents, partners, and children of all ages often feel communicating in families with entrenched in high conflict, power-over relationship patterns. I facilitate your path toward a more positive future with trauma sensitive evidence based practices.

I work primarily with
adolescent
and adult clients that have experienced various traumatic events in their lives. Often times individuals are unaware of the impact that these events have had and continue to have on their day to day lives. I work with individuals to help them learn more about what events are traumatic to them and increase their awareness of how those events continue to impact relationships, work performance, school performance, etc. I am dedicated to helping my clients identify their goals and teach them skills to reach these goals while learning how to navigate and manage life circumstances.

In my work at Innovative Psychological Consultants I know that finding the right connection and fit is one of the most important things in therapy and counseling. I work hard to understand the individual needs of each client. Many people simply need a safe place to process and bounce around ideas. Others are looking for specific tools to help move them in a certain direction. We work together to figure out what will be best for you and how to get there.

It takes courage to be seen during a time of difficulty and to seek out support in therapy. I strive to provide a safe, loving, non-judgmental environment in which growth can occur. Through therapy clients learn appropriate coping skills, learn new approaches for addressing their challenges, and learn how to communicate their thoughts and feelings. I draw from a variety of therapeutic modalities from play and art to help young children communicate what they may struggle to do verbally, to cognitive behavioral, solution focused, and narrative therapy for older clients.

Everyone is the hero or heroine of their own story, but sometimes life happens, and those stories can get off track or turned around. Ben is passionate about helping people get their stories back on track. Therapy begins with a supportive and accepting place to tell those stories. Ben’s therapy style is warm and accepting, with clients as the experts on who they are, where they are in life, and where they want to go. Through creative and collaborative efforts that start from clients’ strengths and goals for themselves, change can come at personal and interpersonal levels.

I believe people possess remarkable strengths and resiliency. My work centers on collaborating with clients to find the balance and change they are seeking. My approach focuses on developing a supportive and respectful relationship with clients while finding creative strategies to help clients move toward growth and personal empowerment. We are all part of a larger system, and I focus on these relationships in my work with individuals, couples, families and across ages. Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
