Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) Therapists in Inver Grove Heights, MN
As we build rapport, we may lean into trauma work via EMDR, exposure work for anxiety and OCD via ERP, or more intensive work via psychodynamic therapy.
I work with adolescents, teens, and adults who experience distress related to anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, trauma, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationships. My goals are to help my clients process complex feelings, find independence, and reduce cognitive concerns while also recognizing each person has unique needs. In practice, I lean into cognitive behavioral and mindfulness approaches as well as EMDR. I strive for each client to experience a cognitive shift that will lead to healthier decision making and less emotional stress.

You’re exhausted—mentally, emotionally, spiritually. Your thoughts spiral. Your emotions feel too big. You’re questioning your faith—or struggling with your kids, your partner, your job. You lie awake, second-guessing everything. You feel stuck, alone, and emotionally worn down. You’re at the end of your rope, unsure how to move forward. Therapy can help you get clarity and feel better about your life. You need someone who “gets it” to help heal what hurts and lead you to more calm, confidence, and peace of mind. I help figure out why you’re stuck, get out of the overwhelm, and into a healthier version of you.

I believe that healing is a highly unique journey that takes courage, curiosity, and acceptance, but frankly, it looks just a little bit different for everyone. Over the years, I have developed a strong interest in working with individuals navigating life transitions whether that is higher education, significant relationship changes, grief and loss, or career related shifts. Oftentimes we can feel overwhelmed, disengaged, anxious, or uncertain about what is yet to come amidst all this change. You are ready for something different, you are ready to live a more fulfilling and connected life.

For OCD, we use Exposure and Response Prevention ( ERP) Therapy.
We get to know the whole person. Instead of seeing problems to fix, we see people in need of remembering they are already whole. Whether you are caught in cycles that leave you exhausted, want better relationships but find them splintering, and/or you find yourself shutting down or shutting off – you don’t have to suffer in silence. Nor do you have to suffer alone. Our identities often intersect with our struggles and our strengths. We'll meet you where you're at, and help you get where you're going. No matter where you are on your journey of becoming – together healing is possible.

“The road is long, with many a winding turn”—an old song refrain that captures the spirit of life’s journey. Often, we benefit from someone walking alongside us for a time, helping us navigate the turns and bumps along the way. As the song continues, “He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother,” reminding us that no one–brother, sister, or sibling–has to carry life’s burdens alone. This is an apt description of what therapy can offer. My trail guide skills are shaped both by lived experience and 30+ years of professional practice. Skills aside, it is the relationship that counts.

As a therapist I see how powerful the mind-body connection can be, not only in how we live our lives, but also how we respond to challenges and interact with others. We are not always able to choose the obstacles in life but I do believe we can work towards responding to them in ways that help us feel empowered and confident. By listening to and understanding our thoughts, feelings and physical sensations we are more effectively able to navigate life and choose paths that better suit our values.

Thank you for finding my page and choosing yourself. Maybe you’re here because…
You’ve been told you're “too sensitive.” You’ve been dealt a hard hand and need someone in your corner. You’re burnt out, over-functioning, wear more than four hats, and there’s nothing left for you by the end of the day. You’re always in your head. You feel numb but also can’t relax. You know you should stop, but you keep saying yes to everyone around you. You’ve noticed you’re coping more and more with screen time, substances, and other distractions. You feel hopeless, helpless, and nothing is working.

I provide clinical assessments for folks who suspect they're Autistic and/or ADHD but were never formally diagnosed, often because they masked well, were misdiagnosed, or were told they seemed "too high-functioning" to ever be considered.
Because I also specialize in OCD, PTSD, and anxiety, I'm skilled at parsing out what's really going on to help give you a clear understanding.
I guide you through a collaborative, affirming assessment: interview, standardized testing, and a feedback session. You leave with a clear understanding of, and ways to advocate for, yourself.

Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) Therapists
Do I need exposure and response prevention therapy?
Many clients decide to seek help for obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors when these symptoms are distressing enough to disrupt everyday life. Any thoughts or behaviors that cause friction in close relationships are also worth addressing. In addition, the client’s symptoms don’t have to be severe for them to benefit from ERP therapy.
Is exposure and response prevention therapy part of cognitive behavioral therapy?
Exposure and response prevention is one specific type of CBT that focuses on behavioral change in response to triggering stimuli. It is related to exposure therapy but adds an additional component of preventing compulsive and harmful responses.
How long does exposure and response prevention therapy take?
While every patient is different, exposure and response prevention therapy typically lasts around 12 sessions, although some treatments can take longer. A therapist will determine if the treatment is complete based on how the client faces their fears, particularly the strongest ones. When a client feels less anxiety about stimuli that once evoked terror or distress, that is generally an indication that they are nearing the end of ERP therapy.
What are the limitations of exposure and response prevention therapy?
The most common pitfalls of exposure and response prevention therapy include not addressing a client’s core fears, allowing the client to avoid their most distressing stimuli, and using imaginary exposure when the client requires real-life exposure (and vice versa). ERP therapy is most effective when the client commits to the full course of treatment; if the client stops early or doesn’t practice what they have learned outside of therapy sessions, they are less likely to have successful outcomes.
