Well was created with the purpose of helping individuals, couples, and families grow independently and as a whole.  We realize that life has its challenges and can sometimes feel overwhelming and unrelenting, which may leave us feeling hopeless.  Other times life may have us feeling stuck and needing someone to walk along side us as we seek understanding.

More than just a way to capture attention, the spelling of Inner Fōkus also carries a personal meaning to the founders. The name is a nod to the German heritage shared by both Dr. Lori and Dr. Patrick, since “fōkus” is the correct spelling of “focus” in German. Our heritage, culture, and environment can have great impacts in shaping who we are. Our name, Inner Fōkus, also serves as a prominent reminder of the importance to occasionally break from current patterns and try new things.

I have felt honored to serve individuals (teens/adult men/adult women) and families (specifically children and parents from birth-5, adoptive/foster caregivers, families working with county based services, or grandparents raising grandchildren) who are experiencing or have experienced traumas that have left them with feelings of attachment disconnect in relationships, struggles with their sense of identity, worth, value or self compassion, difficult/painful life transitions, or the isolation/loneliness that can come with that awful question we sometimes hear our brain ask our hearts: is it just me?

At Up North Therapy, I believe healing works best when people feel truly seen, heard, and safe to be themselves. Life up here can be quiet and beautiful—but it can also be isolating, overwhelming, and heavy in ways that are easy to carry alone for too long. I strive to offer a calm, supportive environment where clients can explore their experiences without judgment. Together, we focus on building insight, emotional regulation, and confidence, while honoring your history and what has helped you survive so far. Whether you’re seeking support for yourself or your child, my goal is to help you feel more grounded and connected.

You want a healthy, fun relationship, with a sense of safety and security, with healthy boundaries, connection, and where you can be yourself. But your relationship feels like it is falling apart, or at the very least it feels like there are times it is a struggle and hurtful. There are often misunderstandings and you feel a gulf between you. You don't want to feel like roommates or snap at one another, and long for connection that feels happy and enjoyable. You're hoping that in therapy you two can learn to share thoughts, needs and ideas in a way that unites you instead of turning into a fight or disagreement.

You’re tired of feeling like your mind never shuts off. You replay conversations, second-guess yourself, and carry the weight of feeling “too much” or “not enough.” Some mornings it’s hard to get out of bed, and the things that once brought you joy—writing, connecting with others, even decorating your space—now feel out of reach. I help individuals and couples who are emotionally exhausted reconnect with their creativity, enhance communication skills to advocate for self, regain confidence, and find clarity and calm again.

Are you experiencing overwhelming grief after the death of a loved one- feeling lost and confused, overloaded with a gamut of emotions ranging from sadness to anger, bewildered and have difficulty thinking, wondering how to get through each day without your loved one, energy level so low you have difficulty getting out of bed, working is a challenge or maybe is preferred for an escape. You are torn whether to process the loss or to hide it- either one creates anxiety and pain. The trauma of loss can affect each of us so differently!

I'm here to not only listen, but help you find a path forward. I enjoy working with couples, folks struggling with anger, and helping to navigate and heal from trauma. If you are an angry person yourself or you have an angry teen that needs someone to talk to, I'm ready to listen and help. For couple's therapy, I follow the Gottman theory rather closely. Issues I can help with are broad, but cover general intimacy, infidelity, communication struggles, and so on. In the past few years, I've started incorporating the Enneagram into my work as well and found it helpful both in couple's and individual therapy.

There are many transitions in life. Sometimes we need help navigating those transitions. My favorite quote is , "Where there is a Will there is a Way." Taking the first step with attending therapy just takes Will to find your Way. I profoundly believe in forming a strong therapeutic relationship and hope to utilize various theoretical skills to meet the unique needs of each client and their family. I enjoy working with children, adults, couples and families from all stages in life.

While I consider myself to be diverse in the populations I work with, I have a particular interest in working with individuals experiencing trauma, grief, difficulties with emotional regulation, and relationship issues. When trauma presents alongside loss, it can be complicated and confusing to sort through. It is my priority to ensure that your story be witnessed through a lens of compassion, curiosity, and fairness. It is my personal mission to create a non-judge mental and inviting space for every person that is looking to heal, and I believe this is accomplished primarily through creating a strong therapeutic relationship.

Starting therapy can feel overwhelming, but you're not alone-and you don’t have to have everything figured out to take that first step. Whether you're healing from past experiences, learning to manage ADHD in a world not built for neurodivergent minds, overcoming anxiety, or simply trying to feel more grounded and empowered, I provide a supportive, nonjudgmental space where growth and healing can happen—at your pace, in your way. Therapy isn’t about fixing you. It’s about discovering what’s already strong within you and learning how to build on it. Together, we can create a space where healing begins and lasting change is possible.

I consider therapy to be a sacred space in which we can learn how to trust and love ourselves, leading us to healthier relationships. It takes a lot of courage to examine our lives in an honest way and I respect those willing to do the work. Therapy can feel vulnerable and so it is important you feel safe in the process. My focus is to make sure you feel heard and understood. I like to share some laughter in the sessions as well. It is good to not take ourselves and life too seriously. We are all just trying to figure it out.

Many of my clients are accomplished people — individuals, couples, and families — who find themselves quietly unsettled despite doing everything right. Not in crisis. Just aware that something beneath the surface is asking for attention. They come in carrying burnout, strained relationships, significant life transitions, or experiences that have left lasting marks. Together we slow things down, look honestly at what's driving the experience, and build a path forward that's genuinely theirs — not just the next logical step. Good therapy is rarely about fixing something. It's about seeing more clearly.

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counseling for seniors and the elderly different from counseling for other age groups?
In general, counseling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialize in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counseling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counselors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counselors specializing in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counselors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
