I have the honor of working with people experiencing a wide variety of concerns including: depression; anxiety; grief/loss; life transitions; chronic illness; postpartum depression; sexual abuse ; relationship problems; low self-esteem; family of origin; stress and more. My relational approach is based on the belief that within the framework of a trusting relationship with a therapist, clients can explore patterns of behavior and emotions which may relate back to earlier relationships. Once a better understanding of the origins of these patterns is developed, people often find lasting freedom from their hold over their lives.

Don’t let Amy’s bright smile fool you, she is tough. In a very warm and approachable way, she is serious about getting down to work and helping clients change their lives.

My ideal client might be afraid to begin with. They may think I will tell them they are crazy, or look at them in shock for what they tell me. When I reassure them their trauma has taken a toll, but they are not crazy, and I can help them, they will relax. They will learn to trust me and open up. By opening up about their lives and what they have been through and working through their trauma, they will come out on the other side realizing they no longer need to experience the pain, and can experience the joy they always strived for.

We hold trauma, grief, loss, and painful memories in our minds and bodies. If these issues aren't healed and released, they come out in painful and often destructive ways: Depression, anxiety, relationship issues, anger, struggles with parenting, substance abuse, isolation, fear, etc. People often feel "stuck" in these issues and are caught in cycles that are difficult to break free. These destructive and painful cycles can be broken and you can be enabled to thrive personally and in your relationships.

I believe that human health must include attending to our psychological and emotional selves. Just as we exercise our bodies, we can exercise our minds – what might we benefit from exploring about what and how and why we “do what we do?” I seek to be a partner to people seeking: Relief from emotional distress; understanding of how the past affects functioning in the present; an opportunity to experience being seen in wholeness; to develop skills and strategies to manage the impact of mental illness; a path to greater self-acceptance and compassion; healthier, more fulfilling relationships.

All parts are welcome, period. I use an Internal Family Systems (IFS) lens with a body-centered, experiential and practical approach. Nonjudgmental, empathic and fiercely compassionate, I extend a radical welcome to any part that shows up. I am genuinely curious and mindful and hold a gentle persistence in encouraging change. I trust that we have smart bodies and that with collaborative observation and curiosity, we can learn from their wisdom and gain valuable insights for healing. I work with clients as equals to best support desired individual and relational goals.

I believe that people need a therapist who has the ability to understand their experience. Once a person has the experience of being understood, a foundation is established to work through more vulnerable and difficult material. It is this proces of establishing a safe and understanding experience and working through of material that allows the possibility of change and the realization of one's true self and potentials.

Are you feeling overwhelmed, easily irritated, frequently worried, or sad? Do you procrastinate or avoid making decisions? Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
