I enjoy working with individuals and
couples
who are struggling with issues stemming from a loved one's or their own substance abuse/recovery, depression or post-traumatic stress from childhood or adult trauma.
Are you feeling overwhelmed, easily irritated, frequently worried, or sad? Do you procrastinate or avoid making decisions? I often hear the phrase "I'm not sure what the problem is but I know I am just not happy." Maybe you just experienced a major life stressor or maybe you have struggled with these issues for years. I offer a safe and supportive environment where you can begin to explore what the problem really is, move towards solutions that will help you cope with challenging life situations and release yourself from any "old baggage" that may be hanging on.

If you deal with poor self image,
relationship
difficulties or other emotional concerns and/or come from a traumatic or dysfunctional background and are interested in finding greater meaning and purpose, improving relationships, achieving inner peace and reaching your potential than I would like to help you reach your goals.
My father was an alcoholic who drank to coverup anxiety and depression and eventually died from it. His life and subsequent death has had a significant impact on me. I couldn't save him but I realized from an early age that I wanted to help others with their problems. Perhaps you have a difficult situation or feel stuck or discouraged. Together we will work to build a supportive and safe
relationship
; identify and clarify issues; help you tell your unique story; and develop strategies for action so that you can make positive changes and move forward in your life.

I enjoy using art therapy, as well as other creative interventions, and believe in meeting people where they are to build a supportive therapeutic
relationship
.
There are so many times in our lives when we are asked to adapt. Whether it's transitioning to a new school or job, changing relationships, parenting through different stresses and stages, managing Anxiety or Depression so that you can best enjoy your life, or just figuring out who you are and how you want to be in this world. Participating in therapy almost always means change, and I enjoy supporting people as they explore this change, learn new strategies, and work to grow.

Providing psychotherapy to adults,
couples
and children is my specialty.
Twenty four years and counting in private practice. I work with psychological and physical manifestations of depression, anxiety and trauma. During the initial meeting a thorough process of assessment will be done together. With questions about how you are currently feeling, thinking and functioning being the focus of my attention. Together a process of psychotherapy will begin with the goal of expanding your capacity to manage and understand your social/emotional/cognitive functions along with your physical experiences in order to create new ways to feel, think, do and be in the world.

I invite you to allow me to help you to heal your
relationship
bonds or to clarify where you are in your
relationship
.
Do you see me? Do I matter to you? Can I depend on you? Come and explore these and other questions that can lead to creating and sustaining a secure connection between you and others. That connection can be the key to helping you to develop resilience in the face of the depression, anxiety or trauma symptoms you may be facing alone. And if you are or were in a
relationship
with a significant other, does this scenario sound familiar -- One of you desperately chases after the other, while the other is unable to respond in a way that is fulfilling? Or perhaps there’s been a betrayal of the trust between you?

I live with my
spouse
, daughter, mother-in-law and three cats.
I have over 15 years’ experience working with individuals and groups in community mental health. I will suggest the most helpful areas to focus your energy on first. Your treatment plan will reflect your larger goals broken down into achievable objectives. I often assign homework between sessions. I am an active participant in therapy. I am an active listener and will ask questions, challenge assumptions and believe in you. My role is to guide, teach skills and provide helpful feedback. Your role is to show up, participate, tell me what isn't working for you and what is. Your opinions and perspectives are important to me.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
