For
children
, I specialize in parent management training and self-instructional training for the treatment of ADHD, oppositional and defiant concerns.
I specialize in the delivery of evidence-based assessment and treatment for a variety of presenting concerns. My primary expertise is in the treatment of anxiety, mood, and trauma-based disorders. I'm also well suited for anyone seeking treatment of self-regulation disorders: such as ADHD or oppositional behaviors. My approach to therapy rests on the premise that personal values and goals are the best long term drivers of our behaviors.I believe that feeling better is not always the same as getting better; that making meaningful, stable changes in one's life often requires some sacrifice in discomfort.

As a
child
and adolescent clinical psychologist, I strongly believe in the power of evidence-based psychology to improve the well-being of
children
, teens and young adults.
As a parent of a struggling teenage son, you want to do whatever you can to help get your teen on the right path. I help struggling teenage guys discover their identity, realize their strengths, and use those strengths to catapult into adulthood with a sense of competence and confidence. Adolescence is an exciting time where teens form their unique identity, build meaningful social connections, and learn to think in an innovative way. Ironically, what makes adolescence so exciting can also make it enormously stressful for both teens and their caretakers.

Parenting is HARD.
Children
are an emotional rollercoaster and it is a new challenge every day trying to figure out how to be "good enough" for them. Every step brings a continued feeling of not knowing. For many families, this can result parents in feeling down, anxious, exhausted, or irritable. Guilt can fall onto us because all these emotions are put on our
children
and partners. It can be lonely to feel this way about the joyous world of being a parent.

As a parent, it can be difficult to see your
child
going through a challenging time and not know how to help. There are so many blogs, posts, and other parents' advice that add to the overwhelming nature and it can led us to feel defeated to have tried everything under the sun to no avail. Sometimes it can take a fresh set of eyes to help look at the dynamics and other factors that may be contributing to your
child
's difficulties to help get the momentum of change going in the desired direction.

Child Therapists
Do I need to attend therapy with my child?
Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.
How long are sessions with child therapists?
Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.
How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?
The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.
How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?
A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
