As a parent of a struggling teenage son, you want to do whatever you can to help get your teen on the right path. I help struggling teenage guys discover their identity, realize their strengths, and use those strengths to catapult into adulthood with a sense of competence and confidence. Adolescence is an exciting time where teens form their unique identity, build meaningful social connections, and learn to think in an innovative way. Ironically, what makes adolescence so exciting can also make it enormously stressful for both teens and their caretakers.

Is your child or adolescent struggling? Maybe a recent divorce, life transition, or addiction in the family has brought out some behaviors that are concerning to you. While I also work with couples, my primary focus is kids and teenagers that need some support or help working through a traumatic event. Often children show symptoms of anxiety, depression, and trauma differently than adults do, but noticing a behavioral change in your child and getting them support right away can make all the difference.

I can strike a balance between my one-on-one work with the teen by coaching and addressing issues with parents.
Research and experience tells us that effective therapy is predicated on a truly meaningful relationship between client and therapist. I am confident that I can provide a time and space where you and/or your child will feel understood, accepted, cared for, and appropriately challenged to change. I work primarily with adolescents and young adults who are struggling with issues such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, grief and loss, divorce, separated and blended families, life transitions, sexual health and sexual identity, alcohol and chemical abuse issues, conflicted family relationships, attachment issues, and emotion and behavior management.

Extensive experience working with adolescent males and their families.
We are created for connection. All of us are searching for meaning, purpose and belonging. We are made to be in relationships with each other. Our relationships provide an opportunity for life's greatest joy and greatest heartache. All of us experience the brokenness of our world and fall short of relational wholeness. Each of us a unique combination of biology and experience, which results in unique challenges, vulnerabilities, strengths, and hopes. I believe everyone has the insight, ability, and potential to thrive in our human experience and sustain a meaningful life.

Do they lack motivation? A young adult attempting to launch or parent trying to help them launch and finding it difficult? We'll find out what's going on and then make a plan to move forward towards wellness.

However, areas of special focus include parent development, adolescent development and mental health, couple's and family relationships, trauma, shame, regret and remorse, self esteem, addictions, parenting, life transitions, depression and anxiety.
Life is difficult. Feeling better is possible. We all have the right and the ability to feel some peace and acceptance about our lives; the things we can control and the things we can not. We may often believe the negative thoughts we have (that we often make up) and act accordingly. You can change your life, your outlook and the way you think and feel about yourself and your relationships. I believe changes and growth occur when an individual is able to challenge their thoughts, examine their perspectives and learn how to be true to themselves.

My goal is to help every child, adolescent , and/or young adult touched by ADHD navigate through their specific challenges, and find their unique areas of brilliance. I have been practicing as a child and adolescent psychologist for over twenty years. I work closely with youth, parents, educators, and families. One of my primary areas of expertise is neuropsychological testing, which has given me great insight into how children and adolescents learn. I founded my own organization, ADHD&U, in 2019 after writing a book about raising my own son with ADHD (Raising Will: Surviving the Brilliance and Blues of ADHD).

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
