I have experience working with children, teens, and adults in individual therapy. I support clients facing challenges like anxiety, depression, trauma, and ADHD. I’ve also worked with families navigating divorce and separation, supported children in the foster care system, and provided affirming care for LGBTQ individuals. I believe that every person has the innate ability to heal and grow—especially when they feel safe, seen, and supported.

I remember when I was a teenager and the conversations around what was going to happen after high school started to arise. The fear of; “I’m only 17…how am I supposed to know what to do for the rest of my life?”, set in. One thing I knew for sure is that I wanted to be in a profession where I could help others. Over the next ten years I started the process of becoming a therapist in the hope that; just maybe, I could be a help to the community around me. My education started with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication and moved on to receive my Masters from St. Mary’s University of MN in Marriage and Family Therapy.

Navigating the complexities of life can often feel overwhelming. I've dedicated my career to exploring the philosophical, psychological, and spiritual dimensions of our experiences, helping individuals find clarity and direction for positive change. When feelings and thoughts become burdensome, relationships strain, or support feels lacking, seeking guidance can illuminate a new path forward. I believe deeply in the power of connection and approach each counseling session with compassion and commitment for you. My goal is to help you individuate, to develop who you are, in your own right.

Every therapist is different for two main reasons. We are different people and, we all work from a theoretical perspective which can be and often is different for each therapist. Consequently, not every therapist is equally effective with every client. For me the combination of who I am (my values, beliefs, experience, education and training) and my Person-Centered theoretical approach results in me being most effective for clients who have reached a point in their lives where they are tired of old patterns, feel stuck, and want change but don't really know what that looks like or how to make it happen.

Carissa is very positive, and very relaxed. She’s not one to rush, or push. Working with her is like taking a long walk with a friend in a state park: your making movement at a chill pace. Carissa is a gifted and talented therapist and has a very calming and centering vibe about her. She is the type of person that is up for talking about, addressing, or accomplishing just about anything. She’s “go with the flow” in all the best ways. This is what makes her such a perfect fit for teens and young adults as she goes at their pace.

Are you finding your tolerance for change and, well, “people” is wearing thin? First, there’s activation energy to get things done, forge ahead. However, you now find yourself on the downcycle of feeling overwhelmed or hopeless with the relentless unrest and societal tensions. By going below the surface, you can find your empowerment to sustain and find ease with uncertainties and tensions. A new paradigm for “mental health” based on recent research in neuroscience and psychophysiology shifts our understanding of how you work, allowing healing and restoration at the source - your nerves. You deserve to live with ease.

Are you struggling with emotional and/or relationship issues and not sure how to deal with them? Seeking help is not easy and I recognize it takes courage to take that first step to reach out to a professional. For that reason, I use gentle, compassionate, and affirming methods to create a safe environment and work at a pace that is most comfortable to you. Sometimes it’s easy to talk about the issues and at other times, it feels too private or painful to reveal. When memories are too painful to share I can even work with them silently. I also incorporate many holistic approaches, honoring the mind, body and spirit connection.

We are not meant to live in isolation. From the moment we are born, our identity and sense of self is tied in with those around us. Over time, it may shift from parents to peer groups to intimate partners, but how we interact with others is at the core of our emotional well-being. Parenting comes with a unique set of questions, self-doubt, and high stakes. For many of us, it may activate unresolved hurt or resentment from our own childhood or invite feelings of inadequacy and uncertainty. Our intimate relationships are another significant part of our lives. Clients can learn how to connect, improve understanding, and strengthen their intimate relationships by moving past the cycles that break down communication and build walls of hurt and defensiveness. Couples can re-establish that “spark,” share a vision of a connected future, and feel both valued and validated by their partners. Experiencing trauma impacts our ability to connect with and receive connection from others. Sometimes we get so stuck in that trauma that it shifts our view of the world and can permanently alter our perception. Therapy is a place to process through this experience, so you can move forward with life.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Delano?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
