I believe that helping people realize a positive outcome in therapy begins with building a relationship founded on trust, confidence, and safety. I work hard to provide a therapeutic environment free of judgment with defined boundaries, clear communication, and stability.

Accepting new clients for telehealth (online or phone therapy) with focus on stress, anxiety and sleep issues.
Many of us struggle with anxiety, stress, and trouble sleeping. We can find ourselves facing difficult life changes and transitions, experiencing difficult relationships, work problems, or issues related to aging and loss. It seems easy these days to feel anxious, discouraged and uncertain about the future. If you are experiencing any of the above concerns, therapy could help. Effective therapy can equip clients with the skills, self-confidence and resilience they can apply effectively to their present situation and also in the future when issues arise.

I enjoy helping people with a variety of problems including anxiety, depressed mood, relationship struggles, insomnia, and health problems including Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
In addition to providing individual psychotherapy, I have facilitated support groups, conducted research, taught courses at the University of Minnesota and trained other healthcare providers. These varied experiences have convinced me that psychological and physical health are intertwined; to heal, we must care for mind, body and spirit.

As you browse profiles looking for the right therapist, you will find many leading with their degrees, training and hopes that they have just the right 'cure' for what you're facing. I look at therapy and being a therapist slightly different. I don't want to imply or assume that I know more about being you than you do. I don't want to imply or assume that I know what's right or best for you. You already have that information and knowledge. My job is to help you uncover it.

I help clients retrain the nervous system, improve sleep, reduce anxiety, and focus on values so they can feel calmer, more present, and more engaged in daily life.
Life is about living, not coping or managing symptoms. That is my mission: to help people get unstuck so they can live life again. I enjoy teaching individuals about psychology, the science behind it, and how it can help you live more fully. I tailor effective psychology treatments to each person’s unique needs. With intentional listening, I incorporate psychology, education, and skills into each conversation. I especially enjoy working with people who have complex health concerns or who have felt dismissed or judged in medical settings.

I also work specifically with individuals struggling insomnia (though this is a newer area of focus for me).
All it takes is a simple call or an email to reach out to help, but I know that this can be one of the hardest parts. Whether you're struggling with anxiety, depression, mood challenges, there can be some small changes to help you start feeling better. I combine Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) skills to help you accept the challenges you're going through, take actions to help them through the power of learning skills, small changes in the messages you give yourself, and mindfulness to stay in the moment and relax.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
