Therapists for Adults in Arden Hills, MN
I came into the therapy profession as a second career. I hold a PhD in musicology and spent my earlier years working as a musician and music teacher/professor. I find that many of the same skills I used in music/teaching also apply to therapy. Each individual's goals and path toward healing and growing are unique, and I see my job as being a guide on that path. I believe clients already have the answers inside, and our work together is to uncover the truth that lives within. I lean heavily on understanding family systems and historical patterns that shaped who we are as we work together to decide who we can become.

I believe that everyone has inherent strengths that can be illuminated through therapy. My approach is centered on exploring your authenticity, providing space where you can share thoughts and feelings without fear or criticism, and strengthening your understanding of yourself in connection to your community. I enjoy working collaboratively with individuals, looking at cultural/systemic barriers when discussing factors of stress. Folks who tend to find their way into my office are looking to address concerns around their identity, anxiety, depression, life transitions, or a wide spectrum of traumatic experiences.

My main goal as a therapist is to help my clients understand how their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are intertwined. Sometimes we need to challenge unhelpful thoughts and behaviors and access a full range of emotions that produces change and creates a healthier outcome. We’ll work together to explore where beliefs originated and work to challenge them.

You’re feeling disconnected, maybe from yourself, maybe from others and there’s a quiet sense of loneliness that’s hard to shake. You might feel stuck, overwhelmed by anxiety or fear, unsure of how to move forward. Joy and meaning feel distant, and you’re searching for a way to reconnect with who you are and what matters most.
Whether you’re new to therapy or have already begun your own healing work, you don’t have to navigate this alone. Reaching this point often means something inside you is ready for change, and that’s an important place to begin.

Facing hardships is something we all have in common. How each of us experience those hardships varies based on who we are, where we come from, what expectations we may have had, and what information we had at the time. Sometimes the hardship was not feeling safe growing up, for example not feeling like you could be yourself or being bullied. A hardship could also be a medical diagnosis, a car accident, being the victim or witness to a crime, a phobia, losing a loved one...and the list goes on. If you are ready to face what hardships you have experienced and how it’s impacted you, I would be honored to help you in this journey.

While I work with adults of all backgrounds, I especially enjoy working with young adults.
I’m glad you're considering help for yourself or a loved one. The thought of working through hard things in your life may evoke feelings of anxiety, discouragement, indifference, or even anger. And yet, the next steps may feel confusing or intimidating. I want to be the one to help you with those next steps. Over the years, I’ve been blessed to work with people who’ve experienced the above thoughts and feelings but were willing to go through some discomfort to ultimately be free from long-lasting, sometimes life-long, mental health difficulties.

I have over 11 years of experience helping adults with anxiety, attachment issues, grief, trauma and more.
My focus is on validating your emotional experience, allowing you to be seen and heard with understanding and compassion, connecting you with your body, and encouraging authentic expression. I work from the premise that each individual has within them the ability to be whole and thrive. As children and throughout life we are reinforced for certain behaviors that are not in our true nature and we let go of some of our inherent gifts because they are not reinforced.

You can make the change you want. And I can help. I can assist you in transforming negative and destructive thoughts and behavior into more helpful and compassionate responses. I start with assessing your particular patterns that are self-defeating to what you would like to change in your life. Then I design a program to help you change these behaviors and cope with your existing situation. This mindfulness-based therapy emphasizes working together to help you with depression, anxiety, addictions, eating disorders, and chronic or emotional pain; resolve relationship issues; or recover from trauma and grief.

FAQ - About Adult Counseling
Why should adults see a therapist?
Adults may benefit from therapy for a wide range of reasons—whether it’s managing symptoms of a diagnosed mental health condition like anxiety or depression, navigating life transitions, coping with grief or trauma, or simply seeking support during a challenging life period. Many adults find that therapy helps them build healthier coping skills and better process their emotions, which may lead to better relationships and reduced stress. It’s important to note that, unlike psychiatrists or primary care physicians, therapists do not prescribe psychiatric medication. However, they will often work alongside prescribing clinicians to ensure coordinated care and can provide behavioral therapy as an important addition to psychiatric medication. Mental health concerns can look different in adulthood than in childhood or adolescence, so finding a therapist with expertise working with adult clients is important. Conditions like major depressive disorder (MDD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for instance, may present or resurface differently in adulthood than in childhood or adolescence. Adult-specific stressors, such as job strain, caregiving responsibilities, relationship challenges, financial stress, or identity transitions, can also influence the onset and type of symptoms an individual experiences. Adult-focused therapists, therefore, are trained to understand these complexities and tailor care accordingly.
How do I know if a therapist is the right fit for me?
When seeking care, it’s important to understand a therapist’s treatment specialties and their overall approach to treatment . Some therapists focus on common adult conditions like anxiety or depression, while others specialize in areas such as trauma, substance use disorders, or obsessive-compulsive disorder. It’s also important to consider a therapist’s training when seeking care. Therapists hold various licenses depending on their training and state requirements. Common therapy credentials include Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs), Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs), Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs), and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs). Psychologists (PhD or PsyD) receive additional doctoral-level training and may focus on assessments or more specialized therapeutic approaches. All of these professionals can provide talk therapy but do not prescribe medication. When searching for a therapist, consider their credentials and training background to ensure a good fit.
How do I find a therapist who sees adults?
Psychology Today’s online directory allows you to search specifically for therapists who work with adults. Each provider profile includes key information such as clinical specialties, therapeutic approaches, licensure, accepted insurance plans, languages spoken, and session fees. Reviewing these details can help you determine whether a particular provider aligns with your needs and can indicate whether they are a good match for adult clients.
