It is my passion to support clients of
Asian
descent and international students with racial identity and acculturation challenges.
When Henry Thoreau gazed at the summer tree and said that “the tenderest fruit needs the tenderest handling,” as a therapist, I believe it's equally true to our mind and our experiences. The problem is the problem, and the person is not the problem. My role as the therapist is to create a safe but brave space for you and to lean into the inner strength that may be shadowed by past wounds, present stress, or the hopelessness of the future. I work with individuals who are struggling with past traumas, cultural or racial identities, and adjustment issues.

"I am not crazy," is the first thing many hear when thinking of mental health. Mental health is less about being crazy and more about over all well-being. Research shows that expressing ourselves can lead to positive change and better understanding of ourselves. During our journey together, I respect my clients by bringing in a culturally informed and non-judgmental lens, utilizing personal, religious/spiritual, and/or cultural strengths approach to healing. Together we will work on listening to our bodies and minds, integrating both in ways that bring positivity and restoration to ourselves and our relationships.

As an
Asian
therapist, I am dedicated to racial and ethnic diversity, equity, and inclusion.
*Limited availability* I collaborate with my clients to identify and examine their unique life narratives and how those narratives inform their life experiences and relationships. Together, we will explore the unique barriers you face and we will work together to minimize the impact of those barriers, practice new ways of thinking and behaving, and create new life narratives. **I will move to Iowa City to pursue a Ph.D. Counseling Psychology degree during July 2022.**

I'm a biracial
Asian
-American woman passionate about racial and ethnic diversity, equity, and inclusion.
I support individual adults (18+) in addressing challenges, some of which include healing and wellness from depression, anxiety, trauma (generational/PTSD/racial), life transitions, stress, low self-esteem, and cultural and relationship challenges. In doing so, I utilize person-centered, strength-based, trauma-informed, and systemic approaches in therapy with specific techniques from ACT, narrative, DBT, CBT, and EMDR. Clients can expect unconditional care, a sense of authenticity, respect for their unique story, and yes, even a space for humor when participating in one of my sessions.

Do you often experience the following: feel like an outsider/burden, even in your own family; struggle with people-pleasing, perfectionism, and setting boundaries; have a hard time knowing, understanding, expressing, and coping with your feelings (or others' feelings); feel like you don't really know yourself, and feel unhappy or empty, even when things are going well? Or perhaps you're struggling to connect and communicate in relationship. If so, you may have experienced Childhood Emotional Neglect (CEN). Fortunately, CEN is treatable (and preventable)!

I am passionate about navigating identity, values exploration, and all things related to relationship/family dynamics in a space where clients can be their unfiltered, unique selves outside of societal norms or expectations. My therapy practice incorporates humor and adapts to the needs of my clients, ranging from saying it like it is to supporting and nurturing the vulnerable emotions and thoughts that come up. Therapy can be uncomfortable and scary because it gives space for people to explore the hard to face things (like dark thoughts, guilt, shame, disappointment, etc.) and the unknown.

I help people who are stuck in painful cycles of conflict, who are ready to learn how to heal, break free and move forward. People who have come to see me find that I have a keen ability to hear them from a deep-subconscious level; that I can help them become more self-aware and empowered into improving several areas of their life. More often than not, when I meet with people they feel like they have tried everything. That is why I don't believe in wasting peoples time, nor do I throw out unnecessary tools and tactics. This means that I am highly attentive to what realistically works best for you.

My ideal client is someone who is motivated and willing to work on promoting their personal growth. Someone who is willing to be challenged and pushed to accomplish their goals. A person who is willing to express vulnerability and address avoidance patterns in order to promote change. I particularly enjoy working with trauma and PTSD and other anxiety based disorders. This is an area that can significantly improve quality of life for my clients when they are able to effectively work through it.

As a counselor, I work with individual clients ages 6 and up. I love helping clients recognize their strengths and create a sense of self-worth. From my experience as a clinician, I have observed that people are most successful at making positive changes in their lives when those changes are implemented gradually with plenty of support and encouragement. People also change through growth and development, and I believe that my role as a doctor and a counselor is to help guide this growth through education, advocacy, and validation.

It is not easy to choose a therapist. On this website,(psychology today) you are at the door steps of many competent therapists. Among us, you are very likely to find a therapist who is specialized in treating your unique symptoms or syndrome or problems: depression or manic, different types of anxiety, trauma, and relationship issues. Let me introduce myself. In my forty years of practice, I have helped clients relieve their symptoms: lift up their depression, slow down their racing thoughts, help them to find time to breathe, work through their trauma, remove their unwanted obsessive thoughts, and restore their good night's sleep.

**I am not accepting couples/family therapy at this time** Are you overwhelmed with navigating pressures from family, culture and society? Is it hard to find someone who can understand the intersections of your identity and life experiences? My BIPOC clients often tell me about the emotional fatigue of having to explain their stories to mainstream providers. This takes the focus away from healing. They want strategies that honor their deep narratives and tools that respect their heritage and cultural wisdom. If you see yourself in any of these struggles, I invite you to schedule a free consultation with me to reclaim your story.

We all have our own unique story, and sometimes are faced with challenges that prevents us from moving forward onto the next chapter. Therapy can provide us with clarity, a better understanding of ourselves, and empowerment to overcome those difficulties. By being aligned in our essence, and living our truth, we can develop a more meaningful, healthy, and balanced life.

I've worked with individuals & families via CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing)/trauma focused therapy, family systems therapy, & play therapy for a variety of issues such as MH & addiction since 1998. I adjust/integrate therapeutic modalities holistically based on needs. I am respectful, laid back and humorous during tough work. I'm supportive & I encourage/challenge you to grow. It is difficult to change while health & wellness may require changes. I may use “tough love” while I am understanding and collaborative. Recovery/health requires action, growth, maturity, & accountability.

How can I find a therapist in Minnesota?
Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
