Life doesn't play nice. At some point in each of our journeys, for all kinds of different reasons, we've had to box up our legitimate needs, silence our honest feelings, hide our grief, and dismiss our authentic aspirations...just to stay afloat. While that strategy is necessary at times, it's never really sustainable. Our souls want to be whole, to find a home for all the forsaken pieces of our experience. Sometime down the road, the effort to pretend we're fine becomes unbearable. Maybe it's a big explosion or maybe the candle quietly goes out, but something in our core knows we have work to do, and we could use some help.
Trained as an art therapist, I love words, but I believe that sometimes we can express ourselves more fully with colors, lines, gestures, and images. My clients don't need to have any art experience, just a willingness to experiment, because art therapy isn't about pretty pictures. It's about giving ourselves more ways to be honest.
What I've learned on my own journey is that a trustworthy companion can make a big difference during the rough parts or even afterwards when I'm trying to make sense of things.
