I am a long-time meditator and often implement mindfulness techniques in the therapeutic process.
Reaching out for help takes so much courage! You or your child may be experiencing a crisis, difficult life transition, or just haven't been feeling like yourself lately. Whether it is depression, anxiety, addiction or behavioral problems, it can often feel exhausting and hopeless. However, I believe wholeheartedly that change is always possible, no matter how hard life gets. I create a warm, compassionate environment in which you feel heard and respected. You are the expert on your life, not me. Together we can develop insight and practical solutions that move you closer to the great life you deserve!

That quality - entailing courage, mindfulness to this moment, and flexibility to deal with unexpected answers and the need to shift gears - may be THE critical challenge, and I am honored to address that with you - whether 2, 19 or 40 years old.
I am a child, teen, and family psychologist and Past-President of the Virginia Academy of Clinical Psychologists, with 30+ years of practice. My background and the core of my work is individual/family therapy from toddler-hood to adult. I have skills and a passion for working with families in a Collaborative Divorce process, a non-litigated process that actually can foster growth in communication and decision-making skills, and I also enjoy providing consultation to coparents following divorce. These ALL build resilience – a core theme in this work!

I believe in a "whatever it takes" client-centered approach which can include some of the following modalities: CBT, DBT, Decision-making, Psycho-education, Stress Management, Direct Social Skills training, Mindfulness, and Relaxation.
In my experience, I've found that the more clients are interested and motivated to make changes, the more they will benefit from the therapeutic process. Client's issues can vary from dealing w a change or transition in their lives to someone who struggles with a chronic mental health issue. Clients are able to be practical and realistic in relation to their goals. Typically, clients are wanting to have a safe space and connection in order to reduce the intensity, duration, or frequency of their issues or associated symptoms.

My work is grounded in positive psychology, facing difficult issues while cultivating positive, health-promoting qualities of mindfulness, emotional intelligence, empathy, compassion, meaning, confidence, self-esteem, and joy.
I believe in a compassionate approach to therapy, working collaboratively to see inner and outer challenges in new ways so that you can have new choices in how you wish to them. Sometimes, it's useful to look to the past in therapy so as to change old patterns of thought, emotion and behavior in order to discover more liberating ways of being in the present and the future. Therapy also focuses on developing new skills to handle one's emotions and relationships so as to decrease suffering and work more effectively towards the goals that you care deeply about.

Cognitive Behavioral Theory and Mindfulness will supply you with the tools to crush the painful stagnation associated with your depression, anxiety, doubt, and insecurity.
Are you looking for a strength-based approach to life? Are you generally an internally peaceful and pleasant person but your unwanted mood or thoughts are more powerful? Do stress, anxiety, and depression make you someone that you do not recognize? Are you mad, sad, or quiet without a true reason that you can express? Are you isolating yourself from activities that you used to enjoy or would consider pleasurable? Are you tired of people looking at who you are from the outside and think that you have everything that you need, but they are missing your internal pain?

I am a trauma informed therapist trained in different modalities, including EMDR, Mindfulness, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, & other Strength Based Modalities.
Our mind supports us in so many ways. But from time to time our mind needs support just like the rest of our body. Events in our life may impact our mind. You might have just gotten some challenging health news, recently lost a loved one, or sometimes it’s something from your past that keeps popping up. Or it could be the day to day of witnessing sadness in the news. Regardless of the reason, your mind deserves the same care as the rest of your body. My specialties include trauma, grief, anxiety, and health conditions (including fertility journeys and perinatal care).

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
