My primary methods of treatment are brief solution focused therapy, relaxation therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma therapy, mindfulness, treatment for athletes and other interventions.
My focus is truly about helping people. We all experience challenges in our lives and feel out of balance from time to time. I believe my role is to help people identify challenges and discover methods to address those challenges-returning balance in their lives. I have treated adolescents, adults and the geriatric population- both in the hospital setting and in general practice. Recently, I completed a certificate course in Sports Social Work. This has expanded my practice to include a special focus for athletes, not only to enhance performance but to address specific needs of athletes.

Whether you want to feel better, sleep better, think and focus better, communicate better, have a better connection with people, it all comes down to living a better life. I help people to achieve any goal, whether it's using hypnosis to kick a bad habit, such as smoking or overeating; or changing negative beliefs, such as not being good enough; or tending to grief and loss by obtaining closure, insight or a deeper understanding of why something ended the way it did, or learning meditation and mindfulness to assist with reaching their full potential. I create a customized approach that suits each client's individual preferences.

My person-centered counseling is well-researched using an integrated approach of mindfulness-based interventions, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy for addressing and healing symptoms of trauma, emotional dysregulation, and dissociation.
Living your best life can be challenging, especially when upsetting and confusing things happen suddenly or continue over time. These stressful events often cause people to feel changed or different than before the stress. You may feel stuck, or that your life has become unmanageable. I will be your guide, your instructor, and your trusted counselor as you develop the strengths you need to work on the deeper issues that may be holding you back. I work well with adults of all ages using a person-centered, trauma-informed approach to help you learn effective skills to calm the body and soothe the mind.

I am guided through an understanding of depth psychology; which seeks to explore/honor the unconscious and conscious aspects of the mind; contemplative practices/mindfulness techniques to help build awareness; and dialectical/cognitive behavioral therapy to provide sufficient practical approaches to help with integration and change.
In my work as a clinician, I utilize a creative and strengths based approach in helping clients identify their own path towards a whole versus fragmented sense of self. My goal in therapy is to empower the client to develop the capacity and skills to move past their suffering into a greater sense of well-being, peace and freedom.

I tend to utilize approaches with an emphasis on self-compassion, mindfulness, and the mind-body connection.
It can be exhausting to cope with self-criticism and the feeling of never being good enough. Whether you're used to criticizing your body, your academic/work performance, or your social relationships, it can be tough to imagine a world in which you are kind to yourself. Through therapy, we can work together to address your inner critic and find new ways to cope with the stress of everyday life.

Many individuals are in need of a welcoming environment where one can express themselves openly and honestly. I welcome all who are facing anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other mental health struggles. I offer a safe space for individuals to work through their struggles, so they are not doing it alone. Coping skills, mindfulness, and focusing on the client's strengths are some of the items we will work on together.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
