You are lying in your bed at 3:00am and you're not sure what went wrong or how things in your life got so derailed. It seems like there is no end to your worrying, stress and fear. This isn’t how you thought life would unfold for you. You can't connect the dots to how you got here, and you certainly can't envision where to go next for things to feel better. Or maybe you're part of a couple, and you don’t recognize the person lying next to you anymore, and you don’t know what happened in your relationship: you think you loved this person - you know you did love this person - but you have no idea how things got so disconnected.

I work best with individuals who feel drawn to discover their purpose in life, and value having a deep and steady awareness of self. Usually these are people who take things on themselves and may have been putting off therapy. Maybe you're burned out on trying to find the answers on your own. Or perhaps there's a particular challenge you just can't get past, such as an addiction, a toxic relationship or job, depression or fear towards the future.

Between sessions I will provide you with support via email or telephone as you work on exposure, mindfulness and other exercises.
I have specialized in working with Obsessive Compulsive Spectrum Disorders since the late 1990's and have worked with hundreds of patients, trained other professionals all over the US, and published a range of books on optimal OCD treatment ("The OCD Meditation Book"; "The ERP Cure"). OCD is the result of miscalibrated circuitry in the brain that should be looking for danger, but for those of us with OCD is looking for perfection which it can never find. Having OCD myself I will be able to more quickly understand the way your OCD works and develop a specially tailored plan to get your brain working better.

especially mindfulness techniques.
You can learn to raise yourself...to enhance the positive aspects of life and build resilience in the face of adversity. The therapeutic relationship is tool to gain self knowledge, acceptance and access to your own wisdom. Therapy does not take difficulties in life away. Instead, you change your relationship to them. You learn the difference between the kind of suffering that is natural and unavoidable from the kind of suffering that is self inflicted. With this growing awareness inner strength and respect for yourself grows. Little by little you uproot destructive patterns and come back to life.

I earned my Master of Social Work from the University of Southern California and am trained in evidence-based interventions like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction, and Emotionally Focused Therapy.
Just as we sometimes need help caring for physical aches and pains, we often need help improving our mental health. I am passionate about helping others look inward to learn more about themselves and connect with their inner voice through the power of therapy. At its heart, therapy is as powerful as what you put into it. Being vulnerable can often feel daunting, but by working together, my goal is to help you build the confidence you need to bravely take the reins when you feel like the life you want is just out of reach.

Once identified, I incorporate solution focused therapies, CBT, and mindfulness.
Are you someone who doesn’t give yourself full permission for pleasure, creativity, and solitude and has fallen out of alignment with what your hearts want? A mom who is full of so much love and good intention, but is also really, really, really tired, burnt-out, and stressed? Are you seeking shift and are motivated to take action, take charge of your life, kick fear in the face and break free from old patterns? My passion is working with clients who feel unbalanced and anxious yet crave peace, and are willing to look deep inside themselves to find it.

I draw from numerous evidence based practices that focus on attachment, mindfulness, understanding our mind/body connection and also the impact that trauma has on our overall wellbeing.
It is always a privilege to walk alongside someone on their journey of healing and growth and to be able to hold space for them where they can feel seen, heard and valued. Whether you come with symptoms of anxiety or depression, or have experienced a traumatic event that needs a safe place to be processed, our time together can provide a means of care and support as you find your way forward. I believe that healing takes place within authentic, honest relationships where we are reminded that we are never alone. I also believe that it's possible to live a full and meaningful life, even in the midst of pain and suffering.

I use a person-centered approach while integrating mindfulness, self-compassion, and body awareness into traditional talk therapy.
One of our most important relationships is the one we have with ourselves. How we talk to ourselves, treat ourselves, and view ourselves impacts our daily living and the relationships around us. Therapy provides an opportunity to gain awareness of how we relate to ourselves and others. We begin to recognize our relational patterns and understand how these patterns were developed and are maintained. Through this self-understanding, we can begin to learn new ways of being with ourselves and others.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
