Mindfulness - a way of paying attention to ourselves in a non-judgemental way in order to understand our responses to life - is one valuable tool I teach.
Loving well and living fully - learning to live with changes in our lives with grace, wisdom and compassion - is what most of us wish for. And yet, the struggles of everyday life leave many of us feeling fearful, worried or sad and sometimes disconnected or alone. One valuable way to discover how to draw on your natural resilience to meet the challenges of life is to participate in psychotherapy. Therapy is an active partnership - where both people are listening and exploring, investigating and discovering those parts of your life that are causing suffering and difficulties - and then finding the ways to heal those places.

Most recently I've worked with parents, families, and couples to help manage the emotional struggles of the family system. I'm wrapping up my credentialing as a Certified Arise Interventionist so I can share my passion with families coping with a loved one's addiction. Ideal client's might be teenagers who are feeling stuck, college aged males who are unsatisfied in life or family members needing support with boundaries and detachment.

My foundational approach comes from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with a focus on mindfulness.
“Knowledge is only rumor until it lives in the muscle.” This proverb from the Asaro tribe of Papua New Guinea is the foundation of how we bring what we learn into a lived experience and create lasting change. We can read books, watch videos, and make resolutions but until we truly move forward in a different way, we run the risk of getting stuck in old patterns. My goal is to help uncover the root causes that lead to the use of substances or behaviors that become detrimental to the spirit and values in the individual. Reclaiming these values and rebuilding self-esteem is possible and begins with a decision to seek help.

Mindfulness, trauma work, and prayer are unique to my practice and many who work with me appreciate my calm demeanor and down-to-earth spirit.
Your life is spinning out of control and you’re about to crash. You’ve tried everything, but you’re overwhelmed and struggling to find balance. You’re confused, anxious, numb, and emotional and don’t even know why. You probably feel ashamed that you feel this way, but no one knows that. You’re a Christian and you know we’re supposed to have it together, but for you it’s different. Life has left you heartbroken, your spirit shattered, and you feel like God has forgotten you.

When possible, I like to incorporate activities that encourage new perspectives to emerge, such as Narrative, Art and mindfulness.
As we navigate daily life sometimes we come across rough waters that overwhelm us, leaving us feeling adrift, without direction or purpose, even stranded and alone. Finding the "right" direction can be petrifying! In both my professional and private life, I've learned that getting support is integral to finding our way again. I am passionate about helping adults and couples learn new skills, uncover new perspectives, connect with a source of strength, and choose a more authentic path. Idea clients include caregiver burnout, young adult transition, parenting and Adult ADHD.

My primary therapeutic approach utilizes positive psychology and combines the application of cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness based therapies.
I am an Annapolis based clinical psychologist. I am also a wife, mother, daughter and friend. I see adults struggling with many issues, including: work/academic, anxiety,depression/mood, sports, health issues and relationship problems. I believe that it's a psychologist's job to collaborate with clients on areas of change. We should nurture, challenge and ultimately become unnecessary.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
