Life is messy, unpredictable, and challenging. At times, the struggles of today are complicated by the worries of the future or hardships of the past. Other times, we feel like our own inner-critic prevents growth and progress. I can help you break down barriers that are holding you back from enjoying the beauty in your life and finding inner peace. I truly believe we all have the capacity to change, heal, and grow. I feel passionately about helping individuals become the best and most authentic versions of themselves. Change is hard and it's also possible!

I use a combination of Person-Centered, Cognitive-Behavioral, Family Systems Theory, and Mindfulness in my approach to counseling.
I help women have find their voice, their confidence, and claim their space in their relationships to their partners, their children, and most importantly, themselves. My clients struggle as you do. Despite their compassion, work ethic, and motivation, life is hard. When they first come in, they feel lost and confused why life feels so hard when they’ve done everything right. They fell stuck and unable to make choices. Big things and little things feel equally overwhelming and unmanageable. Or they find themselves making choices that they later regret and don’t understand why they made them.

I use mindfulness, talk therapy & soon accelerated response therapy.
Change is hard. Life not working is harder. A million experiences have brought you to today...the good, the tragic and the unimaginably lovely. Within your experience is potential for success however you define it and no matter your origin, religion/spirituality, sexual orientation, gender, race, IQ, body size, education. People want good in their lives but sometimes get lost along the way. It's part of being human. I understand that and have built my practice around compassionately normalizing human struggle and helping people create better lives using their commitment to change along with their values and strengths.

We will build your "happiness muscles" with daily practice of mindfulness.
Happiness is possible for each of us. It can seem out of reach, but together we can uncover your goodness and joy. You will feel less worried. You will feel more like you belong here in this world, and in your life. "Mindfulness" sounds complicated, but it simply means being here, at this moment. Feel your toes, notice the colors, breath in--good. That's it. This is something you already know how to do. We will build a practice of gratitude and happiness from this spark.

I approach therapy using a mainly cognitive behavioral approach, with a dash of systems theory and third wave approaches such as mindfulness.
I am a masters-level counselor working on further education in clinical psychology at Kansas City University. Over the last year, I’ve worked with a varied group of people in inpatient care. I’ve focused my studies on therapy, assessment, and diagnosis with children and teenagers. I’m also a believer in compassion and care for everyone I work with and believe that empathy is the start to healing. I believe that everyone is capable of growth and change, and that together we can make that journey.

My unique therapeutic approach entails utilizing the special qualities of music to address challenges in coping, self-esteem, social/communication skills, mindfulness, and self-expression.
Has traditional psychotherapy not been effective for you? Do you find that you're most connected to your emotions and self when engaged in music? Maybe music therapy is what you've been needing! I work with those who need to express themselves in a unique way and require a more engaging and holistic approach than typical talk therapy. Individuals who work with me have challenges being stuck in autopilot and feeling controlled by their emotions, thoughts, and relationships. My clients are ready to make the necessary life changes in a creative way and are looking for sustainable skills to help them in their ever changing environment!

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
