My ideal clients are people who are interested in working on themselves and value personal growth; who share a passion for removing the blocks to intimate connections with themselves and others. I like working with people who have a hard time yielding into connection—who are often excellent givers but have a more difficult time receiving. I enjoy working with individuals who are successful, powerful, or workaholics who struggle with intimacy and connection and who have found external solutions such as achievement, sex, alcohol, exercise, etc. to be lacking in providing a sense of ease, meaning and comfort to their lives.

Thank you for your interest. In this rapidly changing world it can be helpful to find a calming space, to be connected, to feel some consistency, stability, and safety. I believe therapy can help to create this. I have over 20 years of clinical experience in fields of Eating Disorders and Trauma. I appreciate that therapy and recovery involve choice and a commitment--both of which can falter. I value your bravery in seeking help and I am therefore committed to creating space for honesty, enhancing skills of willingness and motivation, finding and empowering your voice, and finding ways to reconnect with your life.

Life is demanding. Sometimes it helps to have a place where you can slow down and think, feel, and talk at your own pace. If you’re feeling stuck or dealing with stress, therapy can help. We can explore whatever feels meaningful to you.

By the time most people seek help, they’ve been operating from a place of their own core wounding, hurting themselves and others in the process. All of our behaviors serve a purpose to meet our needs, even if they are harmful to others and ourselves. I work with clients who have experienced trauma around relationships, have attachment issues, codependency, anxiety, depression, and survivors of abuse. Many people do not recognize unresolved grief, and the need to address it to heal current relationships. My expertise is in working with losses which may go back to early childhood, or recent losses that need to be grieved.

I seek to work with individuals who are moving toward change, perhaps only knowing that change as a feeling, an inclination, and a belief there is a need for this change. They are driven to reveal more of themselves that has been muted by whatever patterns they've assumed. I believe we all pick up things along the way that we think we have to be or must do to get what we need. My aim is to walk alongside you and see if there are some things we are carrying that no longer serve who we are trying to be and/or become. My purpose is to listen past the words used and get to the true intention of what is longing to be heard.

If you are grappling with people-pleasing, codependency, disordered eating, or difficult family relationships, you're not alone. If you struggle with people-pleasing or codependency, you feel stuck in a negative cycle of relating that you can't seem to get out of. With disordered eating, you similarly feel trapped, yet also hopeless, disillusioned, and disheartened. (If you are struggling with disordered eating, check out my group flyer below). With your family, you vacillate between feeling close to them and feeling like you can't get far enough from them. Whichever of these difficult issues you are facing, I can help.

We all know someone who needs professional help. It is clear to you and others that they are not healthy, they are sabotaging their life through a slow form of suicide. Typically this looks like heavy drinking, and/or drug abuse which then is reflected in their personal and professional relationships. Through an intervention by Belina, a clinician of over 25 years, you can get effective help. When a team of loved ones, plus a facilitator such as a seasoned clinician, gathers, change can begin. Call soon, no time should be wasted.

The therapeutic work I practice is grounded in a respect for the capacity of individuals to intuitively know where they are, where they want to be, and their resiliency and capacity for change. Sometimes that intuitive knowing is as simple as, not where I am now, or I find myself acting in ways I told myself I wouldn't or saying things to other's that hurt me when I was young. Sometimes it can be noticing things that work in some ways but also cause distress, such as substance use, isolation, or constant need for work or movement. And knowing and striving to feel more at ease and a better sense of well-being.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
