Often we spend so much time avoiding what makes us uncomfortable or scared that we miss out on the fullness of life. I want to help those who feel stuck, struggle with avoidance, or feel disconnected from their values to build skills of flexibility and mindfulness. I want to work with you to reconnect with your values, set meaningful goals, and embrace the full range of human experience (positive and negative). I also specialize in LGBTQ+ issues and aim to help in a number of ways from self-exploration, navigating relationships, and finding supports in the community.

My experience has been working with individuals with depression, low self-esteem, anger issues, anxiety, building on coping/mindfulness strategies, the LGBTQIA+ community and addressing racial/cultural trauma.
As an inclusive therapist, I provide services to diverse populations who deal with varying stressors and challenges in life. I also want to give acknowledgement to the oppressive and discriminatory systems that work to marginalize individuals and groups in our society. These systems can have a negative effect on our mental health, as well as how we view yourselves and the world. By empowering yourself through therapy, you are making time to put your needs first and discuss issues that are important to your wellbeing. Everyone deserves a space to tell their story and reflect, which is what I can provide during our sessions together.

Depending on the issue and the client’s feelings, I regularly draw from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), family systems, psychodynamic, strength-based, mindfulness coaching, and EMDR.
Whether you've been in therapy before or are getting started for the first time, the process can sometimes feel overwhelming. I know it took a lot for you to get here, so while you’re here, I hope you connect with something that offers a bit of comfort. My experience and interest lies in working with adults healing from complex trauma (C-PTSD), family of origin wounds, narcissistic abuse, attachment issues and addiction. Since earning a Master of Arts degree in Professional Counseling in 2010, I've held clinical positions ranging from residential primary therapist to clinical director, eventually transitioning to private practice.

I’m experienced with mindfulness, energy psychology, psychospiritual integration, motivational interviewing, and Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach (A-CRA).
Certain life experiences can lead to negative subconscious programs and core beliefs that cause us to feel fear, anxiety, shame, disempowerment, or to live in some state of dysregulation and disconnection from our true selves. Healing is a holistic process and therapy can play a vital role in that process. I believe having the “right” support and guidance can make all the difference.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
