We'll collaborate in identifying strengths, gaining mindfulness skills, finding life balance, and in practicing self-care and compassion.
Life these days can be isolating, stressful, and demanding. Thriving can be even more difficult for those struggling with anxiety, past trauma, grief, and life transitions. With my educational and professional emphasis in the field of child and family welfare, I have much experience working with individuals through stressors in the nuclear family, as well as the family of origin. I am passionate about supporting those in transitioning roles such as college, young adulthood, work, parenting, relationships/marriage, empty-nesting, and grief. The goal of our work together will be to make the specific, positive changes you desire.

I use Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy to support you in understanding emotions and achieving relief from feelings of distress.
Do you feel anxious, depressed, or mentally worn out? Are you confused about where these feelings come from and how to make them stop? Have you worried you may always feel this way? Hopelessness is common after wanting and trying to feel better, yet still feeling stuck. Imagine your life free of intrusive thoughts and dysregulated emotions. Imagine healing centered on understanding yourself rather than beating yourself up. Caring for your mental health is challenging, but lasting change is possible. You can experience an emotionally balanced life and find joy in the process of getting there. There are ways to start feeling better!

I believe that this life is meant to be lived fully and freely in every moment. It is a simple concept, but sometimes so difficult to experience as our thoughts keep us held in the past or our fears spiral us into the future. You may feel completely trapped in a cycle of unhealthy thoughts and behaviors and sense you're losing control. Sometimes we struggle getting lost in heartache or pain and forget what life can look like on the other side. I have a genuine passion for coming alongside each person to help rediscover a full and free life with all of its wonders and difficulties.

Anxiety and OCD have a way of misdirecting attention and efforts away from what is most meaningful in life, robbing individuals of the enriching life they desire. In my practice, I am dedicated to helping people unhook from unhelpful cycles of thinking and behaving, reconnect with what matters most to them, and take effective actions toward meaningful change. For some, this means first working together to better understand what your values are and how to get motivated to move towards them. For others, it means diving in to action right away. Whatever stage of your journey you are in, I’d love to help.

We run. We hide. We fight. We comply. And nothing changes. The stress/pain remains. We go to bed and get up the next day to do it all over again. Maybe you're at the beginning stage of coping with a stressful event. Maybe you know you need support. Maybe you don't know what you need. Maybe you're feeling out of options. Life can throw some difficult, seemingly impossible, events at us. When that happens, it's normal to feel out of control. But there is hope. I’ve spent over two decades helping people remove obstacles to living a more fulfilling life. You can feel in control again and experience life as joyful and fun.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
